Unusual beauty
Soft clay tile cuts easily but glazing chips easily as well no matter how you cut: wet, dry, surface or back. Wasn't really a problem as you just use the chipped ends for wall plates and inside corners. Each tile is handmade and different which I really like but a few were bowed and only could be used as smaller cut pieces...no big deal, only had 4 or 5 bad pieces in 3 cases. This is a highly textured, ridged tile and is VERY difficult to grout. You can not use a float as it only fills the ridges and a few swipes with a wet sponge is completely ineffective. I used a grout gun which are universally disliked and this technique really wasn't effective. So I used trowel and pointing tool which was slow but worked. Still, clean up was difficult. Waited 2 hours and cleaned out ridges and valleys with plastic scraper and dry brush. If you wait any longer, the grout will be impossible to remove. This tile is amazingly beautiful and changes colors based on your viewing angle, time of day and lighting. I showed this to other contractors and they all thought it was unique and beautiful, but they all asked me how I was going to grout it! (If you have other ideas that have worked please post them) If you are looking for a truly different, unusual tile that pretty much no one else has, this is your tile. Overall I love it even with the difficulties of grouting and cleaning. I wouldn't suggest doing this yourself if you are a first timer.
