To open a sliding unit, you must first open the unit to the fully open position. Then you lift up and out. There is no track on the top, only on the bottom. On the top there is a piece of vinyl about 3" long or so, called and anti-lift. That piece is to be above the unit when the unit is in closed position, so it can not be lifted there. Hope this helps.
