Questions & Answers

Can i screw 1/4 hardie onto 3/4 plywood subfloor ? (No mortar)

Asked by: Carpitonto
No! Read the installation Guide. Thinset Mortar is absolutely needed to prevent unwanted movement between the subfloor and Cement Board. This helps prevent the tile and grout from cracking prematurely.

Under "Underlayment Instructions", they say "Lightly butt the board joints. Do not leave a gap". We're putting down 3 layers of this over 3/4" OSB, followed by 1/2" engineered wood flooring. We're using the Backer screws to secure it to the subfloor. Can someone confirm that we in fact do not need the gap between the joints, in any of the layers? Thank you
Asked by: RMB1988
RyanSEA, this sounds like an interesting off-label use for cement backerboard. They say HardieBacker is dimensionally stable, so I would follow the other advice here and lightly butt them; touching, but not pressed together. Have you heard of other builders using backerboard as soundproofing, or is this an idea of your own that you are trying out? I'd be interested to know what the results are.

I'm installing backsplash in the kitchen with HardieBacker as the base. Can I adhere wallpaper to the Hardiebacker? Can I adhere a contact type paper to it?
Asked by: Pammi
Wallpaper will show every blemish in the HardieBacker. You will need a thin layer of Thinset or other filler such as spackling. Check your coating material for wallpaper adherence.

can this product be cut with a sabresaw, if so, using what blade type?

want to use it as a backing for a pebble mosiace for outside (under the Eve's) use in FL
Asked by: RBnaples
You can use carbide or diamond tipped blades on our products. The problem is only the 1/2 inch backer is approved for exterior wall applications.

Completed install of 30 sheets in kitchen , hallway, install went well cut board with utility blade worked very well. The most effort is installing all the screws that takes time but the pattern on board very helpful. The older you get the knees get the best of you so take your time an get them into the board so there countersunk a bit. Used a Dewalt drill in handle the torque required to install screws. I would recommend product for floor tile install.

While the HD employee was loading it onto my truck, he lifted the first sheet by one end, bracing it on his knee. Suction caused by the end he was not lifting against the sheet below caused the sheet to snap in half. HD replaced it, but it demonstrates how brittle this stuff is, do not underestimate that. However, it was easy to work with once we got it home.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to install over old subfloor! I needed to do a 425 square foot tiling job. The subfloor was 2 layers of 3/4" plywood (for a total of 1-1/2" thickness), which was nailed/screwed to floor joists. This subfloor was still strong, but it was old, dirty, wavy, and a bit rotten at the surface. I replaced the most rotten sections of subfloor to be safe, but could not afford to replace the whole subfloor. I also could not afford to clean the subfloor via sanding. So, these HardieBacker boards saved the day! These boards are secured to the subfloor with both thin-set AND corrosion resistant screws. The thin-set helped to level the wavy areas, and the screws ensured a secure attachment to the subfloor in the dirty locations. Here are the exact materials I used: 1) This hardiebacker board Model # 220022. 2) Thin-set mortar Model # CBTSG50 (to bond the hardiebacker board to the subfloor). 3) Corrosion resistant cement board screws Model # 23410. 4) Thin-set mortar Model # MTSG50 (to fill the gaps between the hardiebacker board and to bond the tiles to the hardiebacker board). 5) 2" cement board tape Model # FDW8246-U (this tape is pressed into the wet thin-set mortar when filling the gaps between the hardiebacker board). IMPORTANT NOTES: 1 bag of thin-set mortar provides JUST enough material to lay 4 hardiebacker panels. 150 screws are JUST enough to secure 3 hardiebacker panels. The official HardieBacker website has awesome videos to guide your installation. Good luck!

I used their screws but they are hard to get started into material. Great once they take hold. Product is difficult to cut. I figured out to cut it on the backside with a knife as for some reason it breaks easier. I would definitely use again. The other brand is more like a rock and crumbles when cut.

Only thing that would make it better is if it came with predrilled holes on the perimeter to stop it from cracking, and chipping off around the edges. I drilled the holes myself and it stopped the problem. Still a great product that I will use in future projects.

It goes not more easily and does not shatter like other products. We use it on floors and walls alike. The only negative is that using the factory designated screw slots around the edge will often cause the material to crack so we hold off the edges a little more. Otherwise we use the screw pattern recommended by the manufacturer. We also always install the material with a layer of thinset underneath to create a level underlayment with a tighter bond to the subfloor.

Nice that it has dedicated placement spots for screwing it into place. Applied an epoxy-based paint and the backer board took it like a champ! Highly recommend!
