Overview

Mill drills are a lighter alternative to a milling machine. These combine a belt driven drill press with the dual coordinate abilities of the milling machine's table for flexibility and efficiency. A locking collet prevents the cutting tool from falling away from the spindle when lateral forces are experienced against the bit. Although light in construction, the JMD Milling Drilling Machines possess the advantages of space-saving versatility, affordability and light machining capability.

Questions & Answers

New at this, what is the difference between this and a drill press ?

New at this, what is the difference between this and a drill press ?
Asked by: Finisher
The three biggest differences between a drill press and a milling machine are: . The bearings on the spindle are designed to take side load as well as the strictly vertical load of a drill press. . The X-Y table allows for precise movement of a clamped-down workpiece. . The spindle can hold a variety of cutters besides just a drill bit. Other differences are: higher precision, more rigidity, calibrated spindle & table movement, workpiece is frequently in motion while cutting is taking place, and many more. The manual is downloadable above so that should give you an example of a milling machine’s capabilities.

Will this drill/mill work on customizing handguns..like drilling holes through the gun slide and the rough the gun barre

This will be a gift for a friend thats starting gunsmithing
Asked by: Joey
The capabilities of a mill are highly dependent on the skill and experience of the operator. Boring precisely-sized and -located holes is going to rely on precision clamping of your workpiece. On something as irregular as gun parts, the setup takes considerable time. You will need metrology tools such as micrometers, dial indicators, angles, parallel bars, thickness gauges, etc.. you will need [possibly specialized] fixtures for holding your workpiece in a steady position relative to the cutter. Again, mill operation is a SKILL beyond using, say, a belt sander, drill press, tablesaw.

It is alright as a drill but lacks the sturdiness needed for milling. Maybe some really light duty milling if there is such a thing.
