Q:How many weeks before transferring plants outdoors
by|Mar 11, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for your question. This depends on the variety you are growing, days to germ and when your last average frost date is. Typically we like to start our seeds in a seed starting kit 6-8 weeks away from our last average frost date. You can search your county, state for your area's last average frost date. You can also start seeds 1-3 weeks from last average frost date, to get a jump on germination with direct sow seeds for example. Then you will have earlier blooms and/or harvest. If you have further questions please don't hesitate to reach out to our customer service team at 508.285.5800 and our best to you this season.

Q:The title says "kit".. What's in the kit? isn't this just a bag of dirt

      Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out. Title is due to the nomenclature we are required to use based on category the product falls under. The bag consists of peat moss and amendments, not a bag of dirt as other suppliers offer in their seed starting mixes. If we can be of further support don't hesitate to reach out to our customer service team at 508.285.5800 and our best to you this season.

A:  It says mix. That’s what shown is. What the seedstarting mix consists of is on the bag.

            Amazingly Fast Sprouts
I wanted Spaghetti Squash. No transplants that I could find. Darn little seeds sprouted in TWO DAYS! They are 6" after a week. Something worked. Gotta think it was this. I planted in the Jiffy Pots holder with 7 pots. Neat arrangement!

Moldy right out of the package
Purchased some of this Jiffy seed started from my local HD and upon opening the bags found that they were all moldy. I tried to reach out to Jiffy via their Socials contact buttons and via their Email, but it's been a few weeks and still no reply. Very unhappy and had to throw out the packages and purchase a different brand all together (which was perfect).

              Trash
The most water repellent garbage I’ve ever used in my life. Must mix in a barrel or bucket to get it to combine with water first before using in seed trays. If not it will NEVER absorb water. Pass

                  Burn seedlings
So, I have been using this product to grow seedlings for few years now. However, this year it's been a complete disappointment, the seedlings germinated as usual but I noticed now growth is going on although I am following exactly the same steps as I do every year. Then, the seedlings started to change leaf color into dark green, purple, redish and finally yellow in the form of two-three days. It is strange I use a NON GMO seeds every year to grow specific varieties of plants. This indicates after some further experiments from my side that there was plenty of seed fertilizer added to it.Also, I completely agree with other reviewers that it will not retain water and will harden like a rock at once so you will need to keep watching. Unfortunately, I have lost all my seedlings this season( Thank you Jiffy!!!) for this product. Will now start thinking to make my own mix for next season. I checked the soil acidity and it was OK, so the main reason-I think. Is too much seed starter fertilizer!!!! NO MORE JIFFY'S!!

It works well. The product does a great job of holding water for seed starting. I always soak the soil then squeeze out the water before putting it into my seed starting pots. I find that this leaves enough moisture in the soil to start the seeds without having to water them. The Jiffy seed starting mix was also a great value. For a dollar more, it had twice the amount of seed starting soil than the competitors. Why would you not want more?

                    Great Seed starting.
Started my Tomatoes, Peppers, and Basil using this product. One bag will fill 1 and 1/2 18 seed tray. Moisten the soil before sowing the seeds.

                      Seed Starting
This particular mix was nice for starting my seeds indoors this spring. It was light and airy and had a nice earthy smell to it....I like that it was all-natural with no chemicals, too. I did have to place what I wanted to use by container pot in a big bucket to start off and add warm water to it and mix it up to get it at the moisture level of where I wanted it. I found that helpful because it can be "dry". I did some container pots for my deck and I was very pleased with my flowers, especially my sunflower. The seeds came up nice in this starter mix and then i just added some compost and potting soil to it as it grew bigger this summer. It added some density to it so the wind wouldn't blow it over. The roots seemed very strong. I would definitely recommend it for starting plants when using seeds.
