Questions & Answers

Does this mix contain any fertilizer?

Asked by: Mim
No, add a little worm compost when starting seeds and then when the seedlings get their true leaves, use a water soluble fertilizer once a week. I use Dr Earth.

Would this be good for bare root Strawberries?

Would this be good for bare root Strawberries?
Asked by: DaveyDoodle
Thank you for your question. The Jiffy Seed Starting mix would work for you due to the organic make up however we would suggest mixing it 50/50 with a rich garden soil you can find in stores. For Strawberries to thrive they need rich soil with lots of organic matter and a slightly acidic pH (between 5.5 and 6.5). Hope this helps and our best to you this season.

This is my first attempt to start seedlings inside a few weeks before the last frost. If I plan to start gourd seedlings (North Texas) with Jiffy G312 Seed Starting Mix in my own pots with drainage holes, should I put rocks by the drainage holes and add some of my rich black loam soil, then top it off with a layer of moist Jiffy G312 to germinate seeds or just use only moist Jiffy G312? How many inches of moist Jiffy do I need regardless the answer to my first question? My large living room is 30 feet high with 4 large skylights and has clear patio doors covering one entire side of the whole house (living room & 2 bedrooms) and is showered with generous sunshine almost all day, so much that I need absolutely no lights during the day. Seedlings will be started in living room, however should I use a grow light and/or a Jiffy Gro Heat Mat to maintain 70 - 80 degrees?

Gourds and squash will get start in almost anything. I don't think you need this seed starter for larger seeds. If you aren't planning on transplanting into the ground and keeping it in a pot just start it in a container potting mix. No rocks in bottom needed for drainage.

How do you get it completely wet.

Asked by: DianneB
I bought plastic mason's try for a few bucks that is great for mixing up soil or adding some water to it to get it moist and mixing it up much easier than a bucket.
