Do you close the tray with the plastic top after the seeds are planted or leave it open?

Asked by Bibbie March 24, 2018

Answers

Yes. It is a mini greenhouse. It retains heat and will create condensation inside the greenhouse. This provides moisture for the seeds. If it creates too much condensation, just lift the plastic top a little to vent for a day, then replace the lid.

I don't think there's a too old. I reuses mine if I have to. If the seeds I put on the pellet don't germinate. I save the pellet to use again some other time.

Can I feed liquid fertilizer to the pellet ? if so what is the dosage for new seedlings?

I would not add fertilizer until plant is established. Mine grew well without any fertilizer added when planted in ground. Pellet supplied plenty of nutrients.

They are out of season in the stores, so they don't have any. Needed more to use. I've been using the pellets for the last few years.

I love jiffy pellets for seed starting. They're very convenient. Ferry-Morse sold them at a great price.

A sure bet
Customer review from a FerryMorse.com customer logo
I put my most important seeds in the Jiffy Pellets because it always works. The seeds sprout quickly, especially if you put a little warmth under the pellets. Transplanting is quick and easy. Over the past few years, I've had a hard time getting red beets to sprout. This year, I put four or five seeds in each pellet. They sprouted in a few days and went into my cold frame for a few more days. Then I just plopped them into my raised bed about 6 inches apart. The beets will grow together and push each other aside as they grow; so I will have a clump of beets growing together -- saves space and I can just twist the largest beet off the cluster as they grow to size. What fun!
