Q:How long does it take for the pellets to expand before pu tting seeds in ?

Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for your question. It takes only a couple of minutes. Using warm water add 1 - 1 1/2" to tray and pellets will begin to expand. Once pellets reach 1 - 1 1/2" tall ensure they are fully absorbed with water, drain off any excess water and then plant seeds. A:  Thank you for your question and yes the pellets not used will last until next planting, just simply remove the pellets from tray before watering and store in a zip lock bag. Our best to you this season.

A:  I keep the lid on until the seedlings are pushing against it. In the past I haven't needed to add water until I take the lid off. I do keep an eye on them, and if the pellets look/feel dry, I would water enough to dampen them but not have standing water. Once the lid is off, I water them when they start to look/feel dry (which seems to be every day when they're hardening off). Good luck and enjoy!

A:  Thank you for your question. As mentioned in the community answer, water when the pellets appear to be drying out. They also make some great points in regards to the dome and don't keep the pellets soaking wet. A:  Water when it appears they are drying out. The extra humidity helps out tremendously but soon the top will have to come off as the seedlings push against the lid. Do not keep soaking wet but do not let dry out completely either - both are deadly for young seedlings.

A:  You will need to water at most once with the cover on. The seedlings will quickly grow too tall to keep the cover on. With the cover off simply monitor the color of the peet.

A:  You don't want the jiffy pot to dry out. Usually once you add enough water for the plug to expand, plant your seeds and put the top on to enclose the jiffy pots your done. The plugs should remain wet enough to germinate seeds. As long as they stay moist they should be good. Add some water if the jiffy pots start to dry out but be careful because the seeds can rot with too much water. Touch the jiffy pot and if it is dry use an eye dropper to add a few drops of water. Once the plant breaks ground an inch or two you will be ready to plant outside in a bigger container. Plant the plug in the ground and do not remove the plant from the plug. As the plant grows its roots will break through the netting around the plug.

Great way to start my tomatoes and peppers indoors
I used the Jiffy greenhouse in April to get a headstart on my garden. Used one row for each variety of vegetables. The greenhouse allowed me to pick the hardiest plants to transplant in my garden and patio planters. Next year I will be starting all of my flowers indoor as well.

This is my second year purchasing this product, and it is extremely easy to use - especially for a beginner. I used this last year to start my vegetable garden plants (my first time gardening) and it was so simple. You literally just push a seed into the center of each pod, and keep everything well watered. I would highly recommend this for anyone who would like to start plants from seed. I will get this product every year from now on to get my garden started!

Flimsy container and starter fill expand unevenly - seeds in it had low germination rate.
TThe Jiffy Seed Starter Greenhouse #50 cell is a better option. Fill with peat moss and perlite.
