A quality steering system ensures easy, precise turns. The frame is made of heavy formed and welded steel, reinforced in critical areas for long life. The front axle is constructed of solid cast iron that will not bend with automotive-like steering system with sector and pinion steering gears and dual drag links provides a very strong, low-effort, and tight-turning system. The solid one-piece frame is constructed of 12-gauge, 0.11-in. (3.0-mm) steel and full-length robotically welded frame design has high-strength steel rails for added strength and long life.

Could either be old gas or dirt in the fuel line. Also make sure the throttle is not inadvertently pushed partially in the choke position

                        Answer This Question

I asked the same question when I bought my new D170 a few months ago. There were no retailers in my area that would take my old L130 in trade. A local JD tractor dealer told me there was no retail market for the lawn tractor series of mowers. They would only trade on used larger tractors and implements. I contacted a local consignment lot...placed my old tractor there...and sold it in a week.

Home Depot does not have a trade in program for John Deere. You would have to check with a JD dealer to see if they have any such programs.

                        It's an absolute beast
Disregard all of the bad reviews. Some people are just never happy. This thing takes it all and keeps right on going. Do your regular maintenance and it will never let you down. I use it all year, from snowblowing to mowing to hauling. If you have a big property that isn't an actual farm than this is the one. Go big or go home, you won't regret it.

                          D170 Decent Mower
I find the D170 a great mower for my 21 acre farm where I mow a bit more than 1.3 acres. The 25 HP motor works great, smooth, and is enough to cut deep wet thick grass I typically have in the spring. I have a 22HP D140 and this D170 mower is a nice step up from the D140. The 52" deck is really nice for my purposes and cuts the mowing time down greatly. If there was one complaint I would have about this mower is the cost, $400 more dollars for only a 52" deck I find is a bit much. All in all the tractor is decent, functions well, and gets the job I need done with ease.

                            Loving my Deere !
I've had it about a month now. I have to mow my 1 acre corner lot about twice a week, the 54" deck makes short work of it. I get it done in about 35 minutes and push mow the rest. The controls take some getting used too but once you mow a couple times you get it down. I've added a mulching kit and bagger. This is truly a world class mower, you won't be disappointed. The only con I have is the mower deck top is hard to clean. The pulley covers hold what seems like a yard of lawn material. i think investing in a pressure washer will quickly cure this though.

                              D170
I got this same machine basically in 2006 when it was labeled LA150. The steering is hard but other than that runs well and performance has been great. Granted not a heavy user got 290 hrs in 10+ years now, it was a HUGE step up from my old Craftsman for sure. The only major issue was a PTO clutch replacement after 9 years. If your a person who cuts grass during the season once a week at the residential level like me this has been a good mower.

                                Overall good mower.
Belt pulley bracket broke ... Had to replace pulley bracket and belt... less than 5 years old... With 25 hp, mower could be geared to run at faster top speed... Also I would expect better tires with John Deere... Started pumping 2 of them up before each mowing at year 4... Also engine "loaps"... Does not run even rpm's... But it gets the job done... It seems like the engine has lots of torque for tough grass...Overall good mower.

                                  Great Ride on mower
Im a little disapointed that JD seem to be a little half arssed about the finer points Ive had my D170 for a couple of months now and after setting up the deck properly I now have eliminated the "Scalping while cornering" problem some people seem to whine about by setting the anti scalp rollers to an appropriate height I now have nice level even lawns. But, the one gripe that I do have came apparent when it came time to preform the first 8 hour mini service, the greasing of various point on the tractor and deck. Although some are not that easiest to get to, there is one that you can not get to with a ridged nozzled grease gun that is on the center spindle even with the deck off of the tractor. So I purchased a new 45 degree Zerk fitting (grease nipple). Now Greasing the center spindle is easy, either with the deck on or off the tractor. Such an easy fix that an owner really shouldn't have to do. otherwise this would have been a 5 star review.

Love it more with every mow. Had enough power and the deck size is perfect. Wouldnt mind getting more aggressive tires then what came in it though.

                                      Good value for the money
Purchased this lawn tractor about a year ago and have been please. Some times it cranks over a bit much to start up but other than that rides well, mows the yard nicely. Most the the lawn is on a slight incline this D170 has plenty of power while mowing to go up & down with out bogging. Run quiet and I am happy I went with the V-twin as it is smooth running.

Having a large lawn this tractor makes hours of cutting happen in no time. I sold my D140 which was great tractor to upgrade and get this D170. Bigger deck cuts easier and faster without sacrificing the quality of cut. 80 hours on the engine no problems what so ever,

5 Years of Service and still going strong!
I bought my D170 5 years ago to mow almost 2 acres. It has the 52" deck. A deck this size will cut uneven when tractor is at an angle which is to be expected. The mower deck height lever gets a little in the way when getting off but not a big deal. I run it in the summer to cut the lawn and and maintain landscape. I have the snow thrower attachment in the winter so it runs year round. I even use it to move project vehicles around. I do the periodic recommended service and has been reliable. With the heavy snow thrower up front and added stress moving snow in winter it's time to change the steering sector gear. It still has the original belt which I probably should consider changing. All in all, the engine still runs strong and I'm very pleased
