Answer

Given the large size of the cavity, you will have to get creative on how you support the batts. Chicken wire might be an option. Other methods can be found in our installation guidelines: According to the installation guide for installation in a vented crawl space: When installing Kraft-faced insulation, use wire lacing, screen or stiff wire fasteners to hold the insulation firmly in place. https://www.jm.com/content/dam/jm/global/en/building-insulation/Files/BI%20Toolbox/Energy%20Star%20Installation%20Instructions%20JM%20Batts_Rolls_FG.pdf

Can this be used on a 2x4 farmed wall.

Asked by Glenn October 22, 2020
1
Answer

The R-value is determined by the thickness of the insulation and the depth of the wall cavity. So if you used this product in a 2x4 wall you would need to compress the insulation to fit and it would decrease performance. You are better off buying the R-15 product which is designed for 2x4 walls.

Answer

For 2 by 8 rafters, the depth of cavity is ~7.25 inches. In order to achieve maximum R-value you would ideally need to find a product that will fill the entire stud cavity. Johns Manville R-22 which is 7.5 inch thick would be the right thickness. However, i am not seeing the R-22 product in the 24" width that has a kraft facing on it. Thank you.

Does this have the fold down tabs to stapes both sides to the truss for overhead install?

Asked by DWT March 17, 2020

Answers

Yes, it has put down tabs to be stapled to the studs . I instead put it in the floor of the attic over my lanai and it lowered the ceiling temperature from 98 degrees to 88 degrees and made the lanai more comfortable.

The north-facing lanai of my house in Florida was always hot in the afternoon. My infra-red gun showed the lanai ceiling was 98 degrees. I checked in the attic and there was no insulation over the lanai. I built a walkway from the hatch on that side of the house back to the attic over the lanai and added some lights. The rolls of insulation would not fit through the hatch, so I cut each roll into five 8' lengths, rolled those pieces into smaller rolls and put two of them into a large garage bag. That made it easier for me to hand up the insulation through the hatch without brushing the insulation me. I added radiant barrier foil to that section of the attic and put down two layers of insulation, one between the trusses and one over top of the first but perpendicular to the first layer. That lowered the lanai's ceiling temperature from 98 degrees to about 88 degrees and made the lanai more comfortable. My only complaint, and why I gave it a 4 rating, was because the rolls did not fluff out to the full 6" thickness. I'll monitor the insulation and if it fully fluffs out, I'll update this review and change the rating to a 5.

Product was easy to install also. I had a problem with not knowing how much to order it was my first time ordering. We have four rolls left over and Home Depot says we can’t return for a refund since it was originally a pack of 8
