What is the difference between this model and "111FD Series 72 in. Track and Hardware Set for 4-P...

The 170A is a residential graded system for panels up to 40 lbs each. The 111FD is a commercial graded system for panels up to 50 lbs each. The 100FD is a commercial grade system for panels up to 75 lbs each. Also, be aware, the 170A takes up less space and uses a smaller finished opening than the 111FD and 100FD.

I'm making my own doors custom, how much width and length should I subtract from the opening to allow for the hardware?

It's about an 1/8" gap that results from the hinges being inset between the two panels. But, if I remember correctly, there is also an additional 1/4" gap on the right and left sides of the opening. The directions are online...check Youtube. It was very good at explaining all measurements.

Do the hinges have to be mortised?

Asked by Awebs June 27, 2020

Answer

No, the hinges are surface mounted.

can i put 2 30" panels instead of 4 15" on this 60" track

Answer

Unfortunately, the widest panels you can use with our 1700/170A Series Bifold Hardware are 24" panels. It would not work with 30" panels.

can i put 2 panel instead of 4 on this track

As long as the dimensions of your two doors is supported by the hardware, I don't see why you couldn't use the track for two door panels.

They doors will not extend into the closet very much, at all. They should only come outside the back of the track by about 1-1/2" into the closet.

how do i take the doors off temporarily?

At the top hinge, Use the small wrench and loosen the top slide, pop open the tab to release the top pin and side the door towards the center and lift out the door.

I need 72" track, can i use two 36" track together.

Asked by Baybay March 21, 2018

Answer

The only option is to cut the 96" down to 72". I had to trim mine down by a hair or two. You'll just need to make adjustments for panel width.

Is the weight rating per door or per two doors which are hinged together?

Asked by Jimbo May 14, 2016

Answers

The weight rating is for each individual door panel that makes up the entire door. In the words you have used, per door. I'm inclined to use the 170A series (1700 series on the Johnson Hardware website) at the very least for the lightest door panels due to the more robust design and materials than what can be found in the hardware designed for lighter doors. From the 170 through the 200 series, the doors actually hang from a heavier duty track mounted to the door frame rather than be suspended by the pivot pins only and only guided by the track. check the Johnson Hardware website for a better view of how each hardware group works. I give this a 4 star rating for ease of use, but the directions that are provided need some help, there should be a parts list, with the sizes of the screws and what they’re used for. The QR code was the most useful item, it leads to a YouTube video which I found more useful for directions on instal

Nice quality but needs better instructions. The youtube video is helpful but still lacking. I converted an old set of doors to this track and probably would not do that again. Easier to buy new doors due to the screws in the pieces here needed too go in the holes drilled for the old hanging parts. If your door frame is square, which is rare, and the doors are new this would be easy to install. The how to video would be a bit more helpful if it also showed how to square up the doors by adjusting the top and bottom parts.

The 1-page printed diagram is pretty much useless for assembly. Fortunately, there is a decent youtube with clear directions. Would help if they labeled the various screws and lengths to avoid use of the wrong screw for the wrong part. Also. screws for the pivot hinge were too short for my application. Easy enough to correct. Finally, track offset of 3/4" can be adjusted if you want a different look, and that wasn't stated. Over-all a pretty good product and operates smoothly.

There is definitely a bit of a learning curve when installing this hardware compared to the standard tap-in hardware, but, once installed, you should find the bifold doors that are top-hung instead of sitting on the floor will move easier and more effortlessly. If you want to give this hardware a second try, feel free to call us at 800-837-5664 and we will try to help walk you through it. Also, we do have an instruction video/animation at the following link:
