Q:can you mix this primer with Sherwin Williams pva primer ?

Answer This Question

A:  Hi there, thank you for your question. As it turns out, we do not recommend mixing any of our products with anything that is not the exact same paint, primer, etc.. That can lead to issues with the primer, and we cannot guarantee the performance. Have a great day! -Lina

Q:Can I use it to prime painted wall? I am going to buy a gallon of the PVA to paint a small ceiling. I might have 1/2 gallon left. Can I prime a painted wall with it to change to lighter color? Please advise. Can't afford to buy another gallon for 1 wall.

          Fresh drywall's best friend!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I use multiple types of kilz but this is our most go-to as we fill allot of drywall work with our painting company! This one allows the paint to coat the board verses the board soaking up the paint!

            GREAT primer!
We used this to prime our newly installed fresh drywall and the coverage is fantastic! Spreads easily and did not clump for us. We're a bunch of DIYers trying to finish our basement and this product came highly recommended by Reddit. First time using primer so not sure what other primers are like - my only critique is this primer has quite a bit of a strong smell but goes away after it dries.

Terrible primer, major cracking and peeling
I am a professional GC and have personally sprayed hundreds of gallons of primer and have had professional painters spray thousands of gallons on my custom homes and remodels over the last 20 years. This is by far the worst primer I have ever encountered. After applying over 60 gallons on a 4800 sq ft home it started to crack and peel in certain areas along the corners. Scraped and re-primed those areas only to have nearly 30% of the ceiling do the same thing after the paint was applied.

                XLNT new drywall sealer/primer
Used Liz pVA over new drywall on new construction. I was impressed by the amounts of solids in the product and it’s ability to be back rolled and coverage. This is not a fast dry watery product so there is little to no splatter when rolling. The coverage was impressive and made the new drywall appear like a level 5 finish.

                  I was really pleasantly surprised!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I ended up doing the drywall finishing myself and I don’t drywall finish. I used KILZ and it covered and laid better than the high priced wall paint from Behr. It corrected some of the “questionable” areas and my room looks amazing. I debated even putting anymore paint on the walls because the primer looked so go. Price for the coverage amount was great.

                    Did not cover
I purchased PVA at Home Depot and had it shook then came right home and painted. It did not cover well at all. You could see wHere I cut in corners and by the ceiling. As well as pencil marks where I drew that I needed to sand more. Then tonight I went to paint a coat of Kilz3. And it won’t stick. Now what do I use??

Response from Ronald, Kilz Customer CareJun 3, 2022
Hi there, thank you for reviewing our Kilz PVA Drywall Primer. Sorry to hear that the primer didn’t cover as expected, and then you had an issue with the Kilz 3 Premium Primer adhering. For the primer not covering, I wanted to point out that the main function of the primer is to seal the surface, it may not completely cover the existing stains and marks. The coverage will happen when you apply your paint, as it has more solids than primers. Also, it isn’t typical for the Kilz 3 Primer to have an issue adhering to the PVA Primer. I’ve also reached out to you via email to learn more about your project and assist you with this further. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience with us, and I hope to hear from you soon! -Ronald
Buy another primer that has a metal lid.
I have used KILZ products for decades and have always found them superior, including this PVA drywall primer. However, KILZ is now selling its PVA primer in 1-gallon cans that have plastic lids not metal lids (that were used for this primer in the past). The plastic lid leaks enough air that any paint that splashes onto the lid before it is sold dries, flakes off the lid, and falls into the paint. The first picture shows the bottom of the plastic lid after I opened my can of primer and the globs of paint in my strainer from the entire gallon of paint. I then washed the strainer with tap water. The second picture shows the pieces of dried paint that had fallen into the paint before I opened the can. I am not the only person to have this problem. Most to the bad reviews for this primer on Home Depot’s website in 2022 mention globs in the paint, especially at the bottom of the can. So, you either spend an hour straining the paint or pull off the globs of primer as you roll it onto your sheetrock. Instead, I recommend using another brand of primer that does not use a plastic lid on its 1-gallon cans.

                          Lumpy primer is no fun.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I opened a brand new can of PVA primer today and used it on new drywall. It was a miserable experience. The primer was full of lumps. I had to roll with my left hand and continually pick paint "boogers" off with my right hand. Every time I loaded the roller I ended up with half a dozen gobs that I had to pick off. I have used many gallons of Kilz primer before and never experienced this problem.
