Kilz2 Latex. Will this cover a stain that bleeds through after I've primed the surface?

Asked by: John
no, I was told by an associate this was what I needed but it did not cover any better than regular paint.

Can I use as finish paint

Asked by: Butter
Ya.. you could... But I wouldn't. It is very dull and has a chalky finish. It also doesn't "coat" the wall that well, it's not designed to "block" the underlying color, but to seal it in and provide you with a good surface to put your actual paint on. This doesn't provide a good even finish coat, even with 2 coats, I could still see the underlying color coming through a bit, and could see lighter and darker areas and roller lines or brush strokes, but with one coat of finish pain on top, it was completely gone leaving a perfect even finish. The primer will never look good, but isn't meant to "look good", it's meant to seal in stains etc, and give you a good base to attach real pain to.

Can it be used on wallpaper to cover the wall before you paint?
Asked by: Bill
Use oil based primer, the new oil based are less smelly, dry quickly, and seal the wall paper better. I’ve tried both water and oil based primer ... oil based is the way to go. Good luck!

ALL PURPOSE 5 gal. White Interior/Exterior Multi-Surface Primer, Sealer, and Stain Blocker is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 4572.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I used to stop smells and mildew under sink For 2 years I tried to get rid of the smell under my dad’s kitchen sink it was terrible. It was making him sick and me too, every time I came over to visit. The board under the sink was not able to be removed or replaced. I had 2 different workmen tell me this, so I was desperate I had to find something, or I was going to cut the wood out myself regardless. I tried to clean that area with bleach and so many other products, you name it. Nothing worked. I went to the store and asked for help and was sent to their paint specialist. The person directed me to Kilz Spray Paint. I purchased this and applied as directed to the affected wood. WOW and I do mean WOW! What a great product. Not only is the smell gone and it’s been 6 months since the application, the wood is fine, and you can actually put items under the sink again. I really wish I had learned about this amazing product a long time ago. But now that I have, I am a customer for life! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What an amazing difference... I recently had a plumbing catastrophe in my newly purchased condo, and before I had even lived in it 6 months, I found myself without interior walls!!! Yep, I was staring at plumbing pipes and my neighbors drywall for a few months! Anyhow, when the project came together, and I was ready to paint, the serviceman at Home Depot recommended Kilz2 to prep the new drywall before painting. Never having painted before I decided to go with his advice. I'm so glad I did. The Kilz2 product went on evenly and provided a perfect surface to paint my remodel bathroom, which I switched from white to a darker blue. The paint adhered wonderfully with one coat and I now have an amazing looking bathroom finish. Thanks Kilz!!! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Thin layers do the trick In early 2017, I remodeled my in-law apartment that had been painted - sloppily - in light and mid-tone colors. Roller bumps on the ceiling, crude attempt at taping, you know the drill. Painting all surfaces with a roller in late winter/early spring, I found that thin layers worked best; if application is too heavy, the primer will sag. The final color is pale butter yellow, in satin, on walls and trim; after 4 - 5 layers, and in a brightly lit room, I can detect that the darker trims are slightly darker, but there's no evidence of where those colors hit the ceiling, and can't see wall repair, water stain or joint compound spots. I've used this same product to cover cherry red walls in a stairwell (pretty, but impossible to touch up) and repaint with a mid-tone light green; worked perfectly at 3 coats. In conclusion, factor the final color and lighting as well as the flow rate of KILZ 2 and you'll be fine. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Success Depends on the User I've used several gallons of Kilz2 All Purpose both inside and out. I don't understand the critical remarks, but maybe the problem is YOU. Prepare the surface, and be SURE to STIR the primer before you use it. I used it on interior walls, exterior walls, shutters, and window sashes without the first problem. I didn't have problems with runs or coverage. If you get runs, you either didn't stir the primer enough, or you overloaded the brush/roller. You can't put common sense in a paint can, but from reading some of the negative reviews maybe they ought to. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Making Old New Again! Updating an old farmhouse is challenging! How do you make things look fresh & new, and still maintain the original charm? This is our second summer slowly updating our family farm in Ohio. This home is covered in dark wood paneling, a very popular way to cover up 100 year old plaster walls. I decided I’d try and paint just one wall to see if I could do it. I love it! It was tedious painting all the grooves but well worth the effort. I washed the wall with soap and water, did two coats of Kilz All Purpose Primer and finished with a taupe semi gloss to compliment the wallpaper which I love. Looks like ship lap to me! I highly recommend this thick, easy to use primer. Next?! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Kilz 2 is the best primer for all types of wall coverings. I recently began stripping the wallpaper off of my kitchen walls. I only meant to remove a top layer, but all the wallpaper started coming off. The walls were prepared specifically for wallpaper so they were flat. But, they needed to be painted. There probably was some dry paste and bits of paper left on the walls. The Kilz 2 needed little stirring and spread easily across the walls. At the junction of a wall that was painted the Kilz 2 made the transition of paint to no paint seamless. I papered the floor for drips and spills, but Kilz2 doesn't drip. I may have two or three drops from loading a paintbrush too full. But this is the cleanest way to paint This wall looks like there never was wallpaper on it. It is ready to paint now, and I'm ready to remove the rest of the wallpaper in the kitchen to paint with Kilz2! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I applied three coats of Kilz2 to lightly water stained sections of my wooden garage door. It would not cover the stain! The product is advertised to cover light & medium stains, but this is not my experience. One option is to read the details on the back of the can, that recommend to use an oil-based primer to fully cover stains. As a final step I tried Home Depot's Behr Primer+Paint and these were more effective than Kilz2. See the photo below...3 coats of Kilz2 and the stain still bled through. One coat of Behr's Premium Plus Ultra Primer & Paint in One paint covered the stains (this is shown along the edges in the photo below).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very low odor, use it for what its for The cost of Killz2 is excellent, you wont find a better price or better quality for a do-it-all primer water based primer. If your using it to prep a wall for painting, this is all you need, its very thick, extremly low odor. If your trying to block out a dark color, you are going to need two coats, (you can reapply after 1 hour). Dont use Kilz2 on virgin wood, its water based and the wood will soak up the water causing peoblems. I would not use it to block out stains or cover smoke smell, for that I use original Kilz but the smell is overpowering inside the home and ill wear a resperator mask when using original Kilz.
