Questions & Answers

How much will one can cover in sq. ft.

How much will one can cover in sq. ft.
Asked by: smitty
Coverage will HIGHLY depend on what surface you're painting, and how heavy any staining currently is. I think the official answer is 75sf or so, but I tend to only use Kilz on BAD staining and probably get 30-40sf at the density I use it.

is Kilz primer goot to prime ceramic tile before painting
Asked by: Fred
It would probably stick unless you're doing this in a shower or other high-stress place. That said, as a landlord, it really angerred me when an idiot tenant painted 1920s tile...

Can this spray upward to ceiling without clogging nozzle? Or can a person buy an upward facing nozzle?

I know about upshot, need more coverage area than that 10 oz can
Asked by: Joey
No, the nozzle clogs. I don't know of any other can that would cover more area, unless you got a professional sprayer...

Will this block the odor of a shellac finish?

I sprayed a shellac gloss over a painted item and now it smells strongly of ahellac. How do I get rid of the odor?
Asked by: VIKKI
YES, WITH IT BEING A SEALER AND IT WILL PREVENT THE SHELLAC FINISH TO SEEP THROUGH, FOR NO STAINS.

It's nice that this primer is low odor... plus it seals and sands well, like the original... BUT compared to the original Kilz, this stuff is awful! VERY watery... almost impossible to cover anything adequately without runs on the work, down the can and your hands. Better to stick with the original and put up with a little paint smell. I am a professional builder/remodeler and use the original Kilz spray all the time. I buy it by the case because it's a great time saver for priming small areas or spot-priming repairs. The "odorless" Kilz is not worth using... it makes more work in repairing drips & sags and clean up after the nozzle makes a mess.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ended up having to purchase the brush on oil based KIlz instead I purchased this to seal up spots a wood sub floor that was heavily saturated with cat urine. I ended up buying a quart of the brush on oil based KILZ because I couldnt get the spray application thick enough and the amount of air born spray was terrible in the house! I put a cardboard box with the bottom removed over the stains and tried to spray (at a close range) and then close the flaps on the box to contain the HUGE cloud of spray. it was time consuming and very messy. Far less mess and odor with the brush on product. The spray would probably work great on a painted wall to cover small stains.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Gallon of paint and a brush would make less mess. I bought this to do some touch up work in my bathroom. I think more paint dripped out onto my hand/floor/tub/everywhere then actually got sprayed onto my walls. The coverage area was very small, 3x3ft in total. There wasn't enough in the can make an even coat. It came out very thin, blotchy, and just didn't cut it. I have been a fan of the Kilz product for years, and I found this to be a HUGE disappointment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Indispensable for covering nicotine stains I bought a house where a previous tenant had smoked heavily. I used standard Kilz primer on the walls, but the detailed cove molding on the ceiling was taking forever to paint. This spray covered well, didn’t drip, and did the job about 3x faster. Well worth the cost for the results! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Drips like crazy I put this on a bass guitar body. It covered well but it sprayed blotches all over the body. I think it’s gonna be ok it just means some extra sanding. I bought this oderless primer because I have a preemie daughter with delicate lungs and I have to say the odor really is minimal. After I spray it I can’t smell it any more. This product does sand really smooth and makes for a good finish ready for paint. The drips are really frustrating though. I also thought that maybe I didn’t shake it enough, but that’s not the case. I’ve shaken this can for at least 5 minutes and it still drips.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from don't buy The screen will not allow me to change the recommendation to "no." I used this product to prime a brick fireplace. I have done many painting projects and have used the roll on kilz frequently. This product emitted a whiTe powder residue all over the room the fireplace was in. The powder went back at least 10 feet from the fireplace. I panicked and quickly began mopping my new laminate floor. It appears to have come up except for between the cracks in the boards, which I am going to have to clean one crack at a time. If you choose to use this product, cover everything in the room

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Drips and spatters. AVOID I shook the can as instructed. It still threw spots and spatters. Worst of all the spray pattern was hitting the rim of the can and collecting in a little pond just below the nozzle. If you tilt the can, drips go on your floor and your hands. Bad design is all I can say. And... if you are used to a regular spray can, beware. This one has a powerful spray and you have to move the can fast or you get runs added to your drips. I bought two cans. I'm taking the other back and getting brush-on.
