Questions & Answers

Can this be used as paint?

Asked by: Jen
I have this on one wall in my bedroom. It's been there over a year and it looks great. Yes, it takes me a while to decide on a color. LOL! I also used it on my ceiling which has plastered swirls. Looks great..... :)

Can this be tinted?

Asked by: Tom839
No, I was in the store 7/24/2018 and they said the mixing computer wouldn't let them tint it. That was after waiting 20 minutes because they initially said they could do it.

How many coats for new drywall?

How many coats for new drywall?
Asked by: MC
One coat should do. You might already know that the main purpose of PVA is to provide a consistent base for the final coat(s). That way drywall, joint compound, patches, previously painted areas with different sheens etc. will all absorb the final coat evenly and not look blotchy. PVA does that with one coat, but sometimes seems to create another problem. Even using good paint and rollers, it's kinda like painting over plastic, and overlapping can lift paint that was just applied. Don't be surprised if two coats of paint are needed even after being preped with PVA.

PVA 5 Gal. White Interior Drywall Primer is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 293.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Used on Old unpainted/primed drywall I purchased 5 gallons of this product for a single stall garage that had never been painted or sealed. I applied using a Graco airless sprayer and a 517 tip. It sprayed very nicely and dried quickly. It did not cover some moisture stains we had on the walls but significantly hid them. I did use all 5 gallons and could have used more on this project. It does seem to absorb into the drywall readily. I top coated with Glidden paint and was very impressed at the results. I will also say that no matter what paint brand I do not believe in a one coat paint. I used three gallons of paint after priming with great results. Overall I would recommend and use this product again. I have always liked Zinser 1-2-3 but at half the cost this is my go to primer. I would estimate that you use 25%-50% more of this product depending on what it is being applied too compared to Zinser. I am using it on previously primed and painted OSB in a shop, I will update on that application.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Primer We bought this primer specifically for use on new drywall, which is the intended purpose of a PVA product. The paint evened out the wall textures between mud and paper on the first coat. Of course you can see some areas of lighter or heavier coverage from rolling (you really need to look hard) but this is a primer not the top coat. It's main purpose is to seal new drywall and provide a consistent texture, it does that well. The clean up of this product is amazing, all the paint came off our hands and drips came off clothes with a little soap and warm water. One other great thing where we applied a second coat; this primer goes on grey and dried to pure white. The greyness helps you see painted vs unpainted spots so you can get consistent coverage. Tools: 3in straight brush for cut in, quality 3/8 nap roller.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Covers awesome We are in the middle of a very large interior home remodel. Removing old popcorn ceilings from our entire upstairs, removing walls which required patching on the ceiling with new drywall. The PVA primer has covered so great. Love that it goes on a gray and dries to white. Made the 2nd coat so much easier to apply. And we only needed 2 coats to cover everything. We tried another primer in a different room and were so disappointed in the original results. The PVA was a life (and shoulder) saver since I only needed two coats [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It was the most disgusting project ever! The garage had been drywalled 20+ years ago but had never been finished. The drywall paper on the ceiling and walls had turned an ugly brown, and two of the walls had water damage. First we painted the walls and ceiling with Kilz PVA Drywall Primer. Then we painted Kilz 2 over the water damaged area. I couldn't believe it covered the stains! I didn't take Before/After photos because I never want to be reminded how bad it looked. It goes on really light and it provides great coverage and its easy to sand. I've seen guys try to use all types of paint product to prime drywall. For a clean job, using this PVA primer should be a no brainer. It bonds to the raw drywall really well and it also drys really fast. This stuff makes it easy to see any imperfections in your drywall finish and will save you lots of time when you start applying wall or ceiling paint.

This was my first time using this product (I’ve used Kilz before) and was not very impressed It was very thin and caused a lot of roller spatter. I knew it would not hide much but it hide nothing every pin hole showed up. This was a repair job so I did have some painted drywall next to the repaired section my first coat covered the drywall patch ok but the painted section showed through and I had to put on a second coat. I think next time I’ll spray on USG first coat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great coverage for smooth drywall texture We just primed our walls after 1 year since we had our walls re-textured from rough to smooth walls. Killz did a great job at priming our walls for this big project. We were surprised that we didn’t need as much paint coverage as we thought we would have. I replaced a ceiling and 2 walls still had to use two coat did not cover any of my drywall mistakes. I can said when I painted the wall the paint rolled nice and appeared to adhere well.
