Q:how long will it run on a 150 gal propane tank.
by|Sep 2, 2020

Answer This Question

A:  Depends on the load you have on it. We were without power for 4 days in May. We have a 150gal tank and it used about 60 gallons. This in in Texas and it’s hot so our AC was running wide open. 1 4 ton unit, 2100sq ft house. All electric.

A:  Depending on what you are powering in your home a 20kw generator may use around 2-3 gallons/hour. A 150 gallon propane tank will last about 3 days.

A:  Really? It is either LP (propane) or NG (natural gas). Only diesel units sometimes have internal tanks

          Documentation not correct
My user manual and the one on line show how to use this generator with a six button controller but mine only has 4 (missing the select key which is used throughout the manual). I really need to know how to cross reference this to my 4 button controller (photo attached) on product less than 2 years old with same exact part number.

            Weather problem/enclosure warranty
I purchased this generator without the load shed kit one year ago. First of all I highly recommend Home Depot stores for attention to issues and followup. That said, I have reservations about Kohler Corporation and their policies. If your generator runs well then all is good, but if there is an apparent warranty issue, it is like pulling teeth. It has been one year since purchasing this 14K standby generator. I had another Kohler generator in past, a 11K standby with a large metal casing and all was well. Since then Kohler has changed the enclosure. It is not secure against the weather, even though there is a sticker on the enclosure that states it is 'rain proof and weather proof'. I live on farm and the area around my home is open fields mostly. Last winter with the wild storms the generator locked down and stopped running 3 times and needed service to restart, to the tune of over $700. The local Kohler rep was very dependable to my needs. All winter I had the snow removed from the immediate surroundings of the generator but there was blowing and drifting snow nearby. The first shutdown was when the electricity went out and generator came on for 2 hours during a snowstorm. The entire inside was filled with snow and froze the engine down. This took heroic effort by my rep to use a tent and heater to melt the snow and ice. The second and third shutdowns were from fine snow and moisture entering the enclosure through a small back side vent into a compartment that houses a vital electric component, wetting the slip rings and brushes and locking the rotor down. Apparently I was not the only owner this happened to. My dealer/rep attempted to file a warranty for defective enclosure but Kohler refused in that a 'part was not replaced'. The rep told me that this particular exposure issue was discussed with other dealers and he was trying to work out a fix with engineers at Kohler. Kohler response to my request to cover this under warranty was 'it was a bad winter' and put up a fence to protect generator and use burlap to stop fine blowing snow. I have put up fencing, costing me another $2000. The problem is of course the potential for the same problem to recur because the electrical parts exposure is about a foot distance from the open vent to outside. I am continuing to deal with Kohler to cover the damage from what appears to me to be from the new design but defective enclosure. That is exactly why I had bought Kohler over other brands, their quality, their warranty and guarantee to have a weather proof enclosure. Very disappointing. There is nowhere in Kohler's brochures that address the issue of protecting the generator site against weather issues such as I have discussed.

            Great standby
The installer also sells a competitor's brand, but put this one on his own home. Definitely do buy the one with the transfer switch, as buying it separately costs twice as much. Tough to move into place, as I had to buy a couple of 3/4" iron pipes and some heavy rope to build a bridle, then lift it into place with a Bobcat with forks (weighs 565#), but parked it on the pad I had poured, and it's going nowhere now. Be sure to get one big enough for whole house supply, as this one is for mine, but even then, you can't run everything including the A/C at once. Used with a bit of sense, it's plenty big. If you live in country with hard freezes, get the heater kits to be sure it starts in frigid weather. It's worth the extra cost for insurance. Once set up, it's trouble-free, self-testing, and about the only maintenance is a yearly oil change. Get it professionally wired, as it's no job for an amateur.

            Great attention to detail!!!
The Kohler generators are superbly crafted and well thought out. From the oil/air filter location to the pad holes for easy lifting and moving. The On Cue system for convenient monitoring from your mobil phone and/or from your computer is also a great add-on feature for these units. I can conveniently monitor the performance of my generator from the comfort of my home or from anywhere in the world.

            Very reliable power
We purchased this unit over others on the market at the time due to the engine having self adusting valves versus the other engines that you need to occasionally mess around with that. We have now had this Kohler going on 5-6 Years now. Never failed to start when needed including the famous Texas freeze recently. I have recomended this brand to a number of people.

Simply stating - PEACE OF MIND
We purchased the 20kw NG unit in the fall of 2019 and so happy we did. With Florida storms, you never know when the power will go out nor for how long. Never a concern again! Power has been lost several times in the past few years and the Kohler starts up and powers our home for as long as we need without stress or strain. Install looked crazy with the wiring and gas piping however our install team was top notch and everything worked right the first time. I was a little concerned about performing routine maintenance myself, installer stated they do not do preventatives, but after the first one I am not concerned about it at all. The design is such that everything is right there and easily accessible. Way to go Kohler! Do appreciate this product!

                Exceptional quality
We bought a 20kw LP fired Kohler generator about 16 months ago and it’s large enough to run virtually everything in our home during power outages. We especially like the fact that the we can monitor the units operation through the Kohler app on our IPhones. We did our research and found a certified Kohler installer and he guided us through the operation. We highly recommended Kohler generators !

Would I buy again ? Doubtful
Model : 20RES with Automatic Transfer Switch. As of Feb 2022, total accumulated run time = 350 hours. Also, it's been installed and serviced regularly by - and only by - authorized Kohler Dealers. This home generator was installed July 2014. The first two years it ran great, just as advertised. After the third year, when the warranty began to expire, problems arose and I could no longer depend upon it to start automatically when power went out -OR- for the weekly (20 minute) exercises. Is this typical ? Or do I have a lemon ? The engine would try to start with a cough and sputter and, after less than a minute, would stop. Error messages on the machine were multiple, but all ended with the word “Shutdown.” I started keeping an Excel sheet log beginning November 2017 (which I still continue to this day 5 years later_. Kohler dealer first blamed low gas pressure supply. After multiple testing by both the gas company AND Kohler (who charged for some of the service visits) low gas pressure was ultimately ruled out. Then, the supply valve was blamed. It was replaced with a (slightly) larger diameter valve (again – service charge by Kohler). Then the fuel regulator was thought faulty. It too was replaced (Guess who had to pay?). There are more excuses, vent tubes, spark plugs (NGK vs. Champion) Just this morning – the weekly exercises are scheduled for early Sunday morning so I’m home to listen – after two failed attempts at auto-start, I had to go out (thermometer read 25F) to manually start the Kohler generator to run its weekly exercise. I’m flummoxed as to why it sometimes starts and runs – as advertised in the TV commercials - and other times coughs and sputters to a stop. This problem occurs during all four seasons (cold weather and warm) and on humid and dry days. Again, it's been installed and serviced regularly by - and only by - authorized Kohler Dealers. If you’d like to see my Excel worksheet; contact me.

                    Reliable, trust-worthy, and awesome
We installed our 20RESCL in 2018. It has proven highly reliable, trustworthy and always starts when needed. We added the cold-weather heater kit to ensure things stay thawed even in winter cold. 115 hours run-time on the generator so far, it has kept us in power during at least a dozen outages ranging from 4 hours to 12 hours (due to a nearby tornado). Peace of mind and quality of (comfortable) life. This unit runs 4.5T of air conditioning plus the whole rest of the house and is not struggling to do it. And we like the app to show status (works as long as you have internet where the generator is installed).

                      Extremely reliable
I've had one for five years, it was relatively lightly used until last February 2021 where it was used almost none stop for 7 days, 24/7 with very few breaks in between when the power was coming back on and off, no problem whatsoever,. ambient temp. was below freezing and the fuel was LPG.
