I just use one I bought at Bed Bath and Beyond. It's the kind that's a dome, rather than the kind that goes down into the drain.

No i purchased in polished chrome and i purchased from HD because it was cheaper. Tub is still doing great make sure you install tub with cement bed for a nice sturdy floor bond.
If it does thread in to the drain, you may be able to repair the chase/repair the threads.

We did not have a strainer installed with this drain and have had very few occasions when we needed to use a Liquid Plumber-type product. Personally, I would have preferred a drain that is more traditional and not a step to fill-type drain as is this product.
Yes they are supposed to come threaded. Mine came with all threaded holes and fitting screws.
