Q:Can I still use a tub spout and switch between these 2? Which parts do I need.

    Answer This Question

A:  Hi, this is Laura with Kohler Co. I am happy to assist you with your question. A bath spout is not compatible with the HydroRail as the diverter on the column is a two way diverter; it switches between the handshower and showerhead. A three-way diverter would be needed to include a bath spout. Thank you for choosing KOHLER.

            Install appeal
The shower column is supplied as just the column. You will need to add (or reuse) your existing shower head and shower wand. Installation was fairly straightforward, with the exception of the mount that goes where your existing shower pipe exits the wall. The plate is fairly small, so the pipe needs to be almost fully enclosed to enable you to mount the bracket to it. The manufacturer provides plastic toggle bolts. It took about 30 minutes to install. I like the fact that the rail brings the shower head out and away from the wall, and the wand is out of the way. The wand holder is fully adjustable and can be slid up and down the rail and locked in to position wherever you prefer. The bathroom we installed this in was already very nice, but now it has a spa like feel. It makes a statement. Look at the pictures and video for more information.

Striking unit creates the perfect shower
The Hydro Rail is the perfect addition to our bath/shower combo, especially for those times when I need a quick shower, but the wife is already in the dedicated one. It took an hour to install but went easily enough with the right tools. Now I’m starting to pick this over the main shower… might need one there too. First off, I love the unit. It’s striking and gives me plenty of rinse options. The reach overhead is perfect for a rain showerhead while keeping you close enough to the hand shower to get two sprays, a chest level spray, use it as a hand unit or revert to a standard shower. Even better, with the cord attached so low it’s easier to clean the dog here than anywhere else. Installation was a bit intimidating. The instructions are straight forward, but it was nice to have a second pair of hands to move the unit, mark and hold the level at the same time. The old shower arm needed a bit pipe wrench to remove, but the Kohler stub went in quickly with thread tape and the supplied wrench. My main concern was cracking the tile while drilling. To prevent tile cracking and to make clear marks I placed masking tape where the unit would mount to the wall, then dry fit, leveled and marked the holes. A ½ inch Bosch Carbide Glass and Tile Drill let me quickly drill through the tile quickly with no cracking. After that, the wall fasteners went in and the unit bolted right up.

            Great addition to shower
I am impressed with the construction quality of the Hydrorail. Everything is machined brass and very heavy duty. We have comparatively low water pressure since we live on a ranch and pump our own water. Normal shower heads just don’t put out the volume and force I would like to see. By installing the Kohler Hydrorail the wall mounted shower head is replaced with an overhead shower. With the same pressure you get a lot more pleasant experience. The install was relatively simple. It was necessary to drill holes in our porcelain tile but as long as you have a diamond bit that is not a problem. I do have a few gripes however. When I removed the existing shower pipe I discovered that the distance from the pipe elbow to the wall surface was too thin for the supplied adapter. I had to order a “shallow rough-in kit”. If the distance was too large a “deep rough-in kit” would have been necessary. I feel that since this is an expensive item all three adapters should have been included. These adapters are just machined brass and could not add a lot to the cost of the item. The only other issue is that the install requires a 3/8” allen wrench. I have several of these but many home owners would not have them. Again, including the wrench would have been a nice touch. I have not yet added the hand shower. All in all a VERY nice item and it looks great.

            Easiest home remodel solution!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have a TALL family and the showerhead arm was too low to shower comfortably. This hydrorail allowed us to raise the showerhead by over 4" and add a handheld. The install took my husband (who is not particularly handy) less than 30 minutes and we love the results.

Mine was a remodel going into a shower with slate tile. My measurements were within the recommended, but close, for the shower opening. When I used the new Bosch tile/stone tip, the slate did not hold a complete circle, but close enough. The holes are quite wide and some slate chipped away. However, when I inserted the plastic anchors, and pulled them up against the inside of the wall, the stems broke off before sliding the clip part tight against the wall, and then the anchor fell behind the wall! Not good design for my application (nor the cost of this item). I ended up getting metal anchors, which worked, but were much more difficult to insert as they needed to be first inserted through the shower plate, behind the trim, and then inserted through the hole until the wings opened, and finally tightening. Basically, the whole shower system is mounted at once because of how this is put together. What should have been a simple 1 hour job, took me 5 hours. The greatest time consumed was finding the right toggle bolt that was long enough to extend beyond the hole but not too far so to allow enough space for the wings to open. That said, I love the end result and would install it again. I just would not plan on using the included anchors.

I made sure there were studs behind the mounting points because I didn’t want to use the plastic anchors. This thing is mounted to studs in my shower . I didn’t want someone to pull on it or slip and grab ahold of it and pull it out of the wall along with tile! If you’re doing a complete renovation I would suggest you do the same. It has its own diverter , so you can switch from the overhead to the hand held & run them both simultaneously. Looks expensive and no other rail can make the same statement.

It is almost too nice for our bathroom
Wow is this shower rail nice. It works really really good. It looks so nice and shiny. This is just the trick to get that personalized message from your hand held shower head. I did run into an issue with mounting this shower rail. I tried to install it and it stuck out an inch and a half from the shower surround so I had to go back and move in its mounting point. Otherwise I love it.

                nice design
The installation of this wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I would recommend watching the Home Depot install video first just to get a good feel on install. It has a very nice finish, didn't see any runs or weak spots in the finish. My favorite part is all important install pieces are metal and not plastic. If mounted to studs it also works as a slip handle.

Nice Looking addition to the shower area......BUT EXPENSIVE
The HydroRail does two things quite well. First ... it adds a tremendous amount of versatility with the availability of a large rain head shower and the handheld shower wand. Second, this rail is extremely nice looking. All of this can be done in about an hour without needing to tamper with the plumbing inside the wall. However, I think the HUGE downside to this is the cost. For $450, I think a shower head and wand should be included. I think it overprice.

                Very Cool and Beautiful
This is such a beautiful product I can't recommend it highly enough. It's very solid and nicely finished and it is just the right height for my wife and I (I'm 6'2" and my wife is 5'6"). I hate having to bend over when shower heads aren't tall enough, but my wife likes to be able to adjust and change the shower head direction so it can't be too high. It's easy to install, only needs a few screws drilled with a masonry bit into tile or stone. I had it up in less than 20 minutes. We bought a big square shower head with the same finish and they look great.
