Questions & Answers

How can I get the encapsulated bolts through the elongated gasket nipples on the gasket?

I'm unable to get the encapsulated bolts through the elongated nipples on the gasket far enough through to be able to put the washer and gasket on from underneath the toilet base on my older model Wellworth toilet. Both my husband and I have attempted this repeatedly both individually and jointly. Even with significant pressure, the gasket nipples won't compress enough to allow the washer and nut to be placed on the bolt—only two or three bolt threads show—and that's just going through the toilet tank without placing it on the base. Please advise how to proceed.
Asked by: Bonny
Just been through this installation myself, with a little help from Kohler. The new gasket is a different design from the original (the long nipples), but it worked out just fine. Some wisdom from my experience: * Don't use silicone, or any other lube. They will destroy the rubber over time. Use a little hand soap if necessary. * Make sure you use the friction disk under the large plastic nut. * push the bolts through while the tank is off. May need to turn them as you push, but they they do fit snug. * Make sure that the nipples are pushed right the way through into the tank before seating the tank. * Carefully sit the tank onto the toilet, wiggle it slightly to help place it. * Check all three areas of the gasket BETWEEN the tank and toilet, to make sure that the nipples are not showing. * Thread the washers and nuts onto the three bolts. You may need to press down on the bolts to get enough thread through. * Press the tank down firmly near each bolt as you hand tighten the nuts. * Check between the tank and toilet again to make sure the nipples aren't showing, and the gasket is flush to toilet and tank. * Press down on the top of each bolt, and hand tighten the nut, going from one bolt to the next to make sure you tighten evenly. * After going around the three bolts a number of times hand tightening, finish with a quarter turn of a wrench on each nut. Should be good to go!

Installation Question

The 3 rubber standouts, do they face up go to the tank, or face down go to the base?
Asked by: Quinn
They push through into the tank from underneath. As you tighten the bolts they will expand and seal the tank

The original design seemed better engineered (3 nipples and a mushroom top that made a seal). As I tightened the bolts, two of them began to push the nipples out from the bottom of the tank. The tank is not sitting flush on the base. Another reviewer added universal gaskets between this gasket and the base to fill the gap. I will try that to square everything up. It is amazing how these manufactures do not provide adequate instructions or tips on their website.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked like a charm! Got a panicky call from my sister-in-law late one afternoon that when she flushed the toilet water ran out of the bottom of the tank and when the tank started to refill it quit leaking. Since I'm retired, I get these calls from time to time. I really don't mind because it gives me something to do besides spending money on stuff I think I need but really don't. Anyway, I knew what was wrong so I carried a spare bowl to tank seal that I had and a few tools and went on over. After getting there and surveyed the situation I noticed that the seal and gasket on the toilet was triangular shaped. The toilet was a Sterling toilet and I'm assuming that Kohler makes the Sterling because it uses Kohler parts. The kit I bought had everything you need to seal the tank to bowl connection. It is a time consuming process but within an hour I had it back together along with replacing the toilet seat that was rickety. The Kohler kit has never leaked a drop since my repair. (0^0)

If you have a Kohler 3 bolt toilet that needs repair, you need this product. I didn't discover until I bought the universal rebuild kit and got home and opened it, that most of the parts won't work on the Kohler 3 bolt. They tell you this on the instructions sealed inside the universal package. It would have been nice if it was on the outside of the universal repair package so you knew before you bought it. The Kohler gasket works okay but the gasket alone costs about as much as a complete universal kit. It is a great way for Kohler to make money but I don't see any benefit over the old style donut gasket used for years and included in a universal kit for less money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DId not work with my 1985 Kohler toilet After installing most of my toilet tank rebuild kit, I came to the sentence that says the tank to bowl seal in this kit doesn't work for most Kohler toilets. So I obtained this triangle gasket, and installed it faithfully according to instructions. Upon the test flush, water poured out from the front of the bottom of the tank, over the rear part of bowl rim, into the bowl. I thought, is this supposed to be a bidet adapter? I removed the triangle gasket, then turned the pink gasket (that came with the rebuild kit) upside down, then secured it with the flush valve large nut. Then continued according to instructions. Works perfectly. No leaks. This triangle gasket does not work for all Kohler toilets.

I wish they would not have changed the mold from the original design, but this direct replacement works perfectly. Originally the part had more material between the bolt holes. Now the part has "spokes" for the bolt holes. It works fine, but the gasket seems to twist a bit when tightening the nut for the water inlet tower.
