I am mixing/rototilling 3" of Topper with existing soil on a 20'x20' area that is going to be finished with sod. I want to mix in the topper now but won't be planting the sod for another month, maybe 2 months. Is that OK, or is it better to sod soon after mixing in Topper? In other words, is it better to plant the sod while the topper is fresh. Thank you.
Asked by: Pete
Planting the sod 2 months after rototilling in "topper" is probably better than an immediate planting.Time will allow everything to settle and organics can start to break down which will be even more beneficial to the sod.

I have removed all grass and weeds from front lawn. I would like to know the steps of planting new seeds? Some say use a tiller down 4-6 inches with Topper mix in it and smooth and level off (Some say you must add starter Fertilizer to Topper because it don't has Starter Fertilizer in it)? I would like full steps to do new seeding. And What is a good grass seed for full sun lawn that's low up keep for California? Thank you for all your help in advance.
Asked by: Randie
Hi Randie. Thank you for your question. Kellogg’s and tvs75 covered the steps pretty well. As for the best grass to use in California, a fescue seems to get the best result. Once established, it will stay green all year long with regular care and fertilization. Once established, a two to three-inch-high lawn will be most desirable. Fertilize every 2 months. You may need a Weed N’ Feed after 6-9 months just to keep the weeds that blow in at bay. https://www.homedepot.com/s/weed%2520and%2520feed%2520fertilizer?NCNI-5 Use a pre-emergent like Scotts Halts in the spring to help keep the weed seeds from germinating. https://www.homedepot.com/s/Spring%2520weed%2520and%2520feed%2520fertilizer%2520with%2520Halts?NCNI-5 Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. Asked by: HELIO
This is an excellent topper. You can use it to fill in valleys in your lawn, or sprinkle thinly to just cover your seed or sod as your plant or reseed. The square footage is dependent on your terrain. If you are using to fill in areas, it can be upwards of a whole inch (although not recommended). If you are reseeding, be sure to wear gloves and sprinkle as needed. I know this is not what you are looking for as an approximate usage, but that is what you do. One sack can cover a solid 500sq feet as a sprinkle. No need to mix the product with the soil. It is just a topper. If you are looking to enrich your soil, you will want to purchase a soil amendment instead.
