Q:Is the Kellogg Natural Organic Potting Mix sterile and nutrient free?
by|Jul 25, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  We do not sterilize any of our soils. Doing so would kill beneficial soil microbes needed to support plant growth and production. All Kellogg Garden Organics soils do have organic ingredients such as composted poultry manure, worm castings and kelp meal.

Q:can this be used to start seedlings ?
    by|Jan 11, 2023
    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for contacting us. If you’re planting in containers, Potting Mix is a great potting soil that is ready to use right out of the bag. A couple of things to keep in mind when using this Mix: First, it is not intended to be used to start seeds. We recommend using a dedicated seed starting mix if you are going to be starting from seeds. Scoop out a cup or so of the mix and replace it with the seed starter and plant your seeds in there. Then the plants will grow out into the raised bed mix when they are bigger and stronger.

      Answer This Question

A:  For best results, we would recommend a dedicated seed starter. The material will be finer and allow your seeds to germinate easier.

Q:Does this have any added chemicals, or just the soil 'ingredients'? By 'any added chemicals,' I mean to include nutrients that were added to it.

Call this mulch, not potting mix
Big chunks of wood and sticks, plus lots of sand. This is the worst potting mix I've ever seen.

The use of aged wood fines is more common in organic soil mixes than conventional synthetic soil mixes. It mimics the natural and organic activity that occurs on the forest floor. For nearly 100 years, we have used fully composted aged wood fines in our soil mixes for three reasons – Better soil structure with its slightly larger particle size helps air and water penetrate deeper into the soil, allowing for better root development and overall plant health – Excellent food source for beneficial soil microbes which help plants resist pests and disease – A more sustainable resource benefiting the environment. No doubt, it does look different than conventional synthetic peat-based soil mixes. KelloggGardenProducts

            Stunted seedlings
This is doing very badly in comparison to other seed starting mixes I am testing for tomatoes. The seedlings are stunted. I haven't fertilized them yet, but even the yellow promix soil that contains no fertilizer isn't stunted like this.

Not for me. Mostly composting wood. Definitely needs to be added to equal amounts of another houseplants soil.

              Not good for seedlings
Turned most of my seedlings yellow when I transferred them. Don’t ruin it like I did!

                Poor Choice for Seedlings
I started some tomato and pepper seedlings and transferred them into either this or a more purpose specific seed starting mix. The plants in this soil are struggling and appear over fertilized, while the plants in the other soil are growing steadily larger. Pic for reference, with both plants being Black Krim tomatoes started on the same day.

I love the composition of the material. I use it with other soils for potting plants. It helps with drainage.
