Can I use a led light bulb instrad and what tyoe of socket for the bulb? Thanks Peter

Asked by Peter October 30, 2016

Answer

The bulbs are 7 Watt incandescent low-voltage bayonet bulbs. (Apparently, 11 Watt incandescent low-voltage bayonet bulbs that fit the same sockets are also available.) If your purpose for using an LED light bulb is to save energy, don't do it. These lights are designed to use incandescent bulbs. The extra heat from the incandescent bulbs helps keep the light fixtures dry.

This product is well-designed. It has incandescent bulbs, which provide nice warm light and evaporate condensation out of the light fixtures. The light is well diffused. The light fixtures are designed to also serve as junction boxes. They can be mounted flush with the ground, and are strong enough to handle foot traffic and light vehicular traffic. (When mounted flush, they have the same problem as all other can lights -- the contrast between the brightness of the light and the darkness of the surface they are mounted in makes that surface even harder to see.) The transformer is appropriately sized, and has options for automatically turning on and off based on tirmers and/or light levels. I chose to make it controlled by my rear stoop's light switch instead. As far as I can tell, the transformer is silent. There are several ways that this paver light kit can be upgraded. The manufacturer was happy to answer my questions, and provided helpful suggestions. I chose to: * Control the lights using my rear stoop's light switch. (Most American building codes require Ground-Fault Circuit Interruption protection when an underground circuit is permanently connected to building wiring.) * Paint the transformer to match my foundation. * Paint the transformer's power cord to match my foundation and my house siding. * Use 14-2 UF wire instead of the supplied 16-2 UF wire. (Home Depot sells the 14-2 wire in 25-foot, 50-foot, and 100-foot packages, as well as by the foot.) UF wire is needed, because even if you install it in conduit, it is likely that some of the wire will be directly buried. * Encase the wire in rigid PVC electrical conduit. In order to push the wire through, I needed to include conduit bodies after each 180 degrees of bend. Fortunately, I did not need many conduit bodies, because the light fixtures were designed to be the junction boxes. Most of the conduit sections were just long Us running from one light fixture to the next. (Home Depot sells Schedule 40 PVC electrical conduit and fittings.) I used Schedule 40 plumbing-grade PVC caps at the ends, and used a drill to ream out a slot in each cap for inserting the wire. I used silicone caulk to seal the holes.(Home Depot also sells the caps and caulk.) * Run the conduit 11" below ground. This minimizes the chance of a shovel accidentally cutting the conduit. It also avoids needing to "call before you dig". (Where I live, "call before you dig" is required when digging 12" or deeper.) * Use the same underlying material under the light fixtures as is under the other stepping stones in my path. (My path has native soil under the path, but some people use sand instead.)
