Not necessarily, has to be in the same room, I keep mine on a cabinet about 8 feet from the unit, but it's not always pointing at the unit.
The unit weighs about 40 pounds, including the window fittings and power cord.

Thank you Nicholi for your recent inquiry with The Home Depot for Keystone 5,000 BTU Window Air Conditioner with Remote Control in White. The price of this item is $185.00. We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you in the future.
The temperature range on the unit and the remote goes from 62 degrees to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. In a small room, (about 100 sq.ft.), 74 degrees is quite comfortable.
I don't see anything that says it is EnergyStar certified, but it only draws 3.6 amps on startup, and it does have an energy saver mode that turns off the fan if the room is cool enough, and the compressor has not turned on for five minutes.
Just slightly over 16". I installed mine through wall in a 12.5" x 21.5" opening using the side rails. If you didn't use the sides a 12.5" x 16.5" would work.
There is some conflicting information, but it appears that the parent company is Midea, located in China. The only information I can get there is that they have manufacturing plants around the world. I've also heard it is manufactured by Lennox, but I can't find any corroborating evidence of that. It's probably safe to say it's not made in the U.S.A.
