Cabon monoxide is heavier than air mount it at a low point on the wall below your knees, this way you have more warning in advance. If on the ceiling it would not go off till it's to late and that would be very bad.

The sensor life will be shorter. I use these at our cabin at 6800 feet. When we are not there the place is not heated so I cut the plastic locking tab that keeps it on the wall mounting plate and take the detector home with me. The previous detectors did not have this locking device. If you cut the lock you must rember that you do so at your own peril, risk and responsibilty.

defective, reading never changed despite being in CO filled room
Installed a ventless heater in the garage, and was curious how much CO was generated when the garage was closed. It read 0 the entire time, never changed. I back my vehicle up into the garage, so when I start it in the mornings, I figured something was wrong because it never changed, yet CO fumes were definitely present in the garage. I borrowed one from work overnight to test my theory, and I was right. the $100 sensor immediately triggered the alarm, and the numbers seemed more reasonable. I thought maybe the Kidde monitor needs more time between readings, but no amount of time with sensors left in a closed garage after a vehicle ran inside it for a minute did the Kidde alarm update. The only good thing about this is the battery is good for 10 years, so you can watch the number stay at 0 regardless of actual CO presence.

Response from Kidde ExpertMay 17, 2020
Hello ScottG,
This carbon monoxide detector will detect 70 PPM in 60-240 minutes of sustained exposure. There are commercial and low level readers that will alarm at lower levels. Unsure of what you are comparing it to. These are residential units designed for conditions inside the home. It is not recommended for garages and other conditions.
We apologize for the disappointment and if you wish to discuss further, please call Kidde support at 1-800-880-6788 Open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM EST Saturday 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM EST. They will be better able to answer your question(s). Thank you.

I bought this detector to place in a bedroom used by our grandkids. There is a chimney in one of the walls so I've had concerns about carbon monoxide. The digit display shows none has been detected. I like the fact that I don't have to worry about battery replacement for ten years. I've installed them in three locations in our house. Easy installation with the removable mounting plate.

my old old a/c plugin unit finally gave me an END signal , to buy a new one .. since i also have wired in hall ceiling units,, i always had one in the bedroom ,, ha worse place to get overcome ... so seeing this 2 pack was a no brainer for me to now not just put them where ever ,, like the bedroom and family room .. is so much more comforting to have more than one .. i also prefer to have the digital readout to know the level of CM where my ceiling units don't have ,, if this gas can kill you ,, i consider these things as cost is not an issue and definitely prefer more than one to rely on . .. Here's a tip for everyone ,, i use marker to write expire date on it ,, so you don't have to take it apart .. my unit was manufactured may 2018 , purchased april 2019 to last me to at least arpil 2029

Obviously, I cannot test the unit by filling the house with carbon monoxide so, primarily, my review deals with installation and appearance of the unit. It's a trivially easy install. Remove the back mounting plate (you'll need a small, electronics size flat head screwdriver for this, there is a small tab you need to release to get the plate to slide off fully), make sure the plate is level and mark drill points. You'll want to drill holes slightly smaller than the plastic inserts (included) which hold the screws in place. Unless you have a wall stud handy which I did not. Then hammer (lightly of course) the inserts into the dry wall. Screw the plate to the wall, slide the unit on and that's it. Like a smoke detector, there is a test button. Of course, you should test regularly. The alarm is quite strident and annoying and not something you'd be likely to sleep through. Which in the case of an alarm is a positive. If your home uses natural gas, at least one of these kinds of units is a good idea. It's true carbon monoxide poisoning is rare but should it happen, it's insidious. It makes one drowsy and you may think you need to get to bed. Problem being, you may not wake up. Definitely a "better safe than sorry" situation. And it's a nicely unobtrusive device. Not something that will "stick out" glaringly at all.

We have been needing a CO detector for years, but like many other things, it went on the back burner. What I noticed about this unit is it had everything important for safety. I like the fact that it had a 10 yr lithium battery.

This CO detector is a great find! I like the idea that it is self-contained and does not require any batteries for it's lifespan. After 10 years, it can be replaced by referencing the installed date or the unit is designed to alert the homeowner via alarm when the batteries have been depleted and has reached end of life. The unit is shipped with the mounting plate removed. Once the mounting plate is connected with the CO alarm, the batteries start. No worries with getting a unit that has been sitting on the shelves for a year. The alarm was easy to install. It can be used as a table-top alarm, but I installed it using the two supplied drywall anchors and screws near a bedroom door. Once it was connected to the backplate - it started up and it's been monitoring since then. The digital readout is also a nice feature on this unit. You can see status on recent readings, mine has been showing "0", which is good, since it was installed.
