Hello Jason, If the unit is still chirping, but not saying "low battery" it may be a sensor error. Please call Kidde support at 1-800-880-6788 Open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM EST Saturday 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM EST. They're the experts and will be able to assist. Thank you.

The KIDDE Hardwired Smoke/CO alarm can replace any other brand of the same kind (hardwired). It will however, require a change to the mounting base included with the KIDDE alarm. The new base will mount right to the electrical box. Just make sure the power to the box is off before you replace the wiring harness with the one that comes with the KIDDE alarm.

how do they communicate with each other

Asked by Pattee October 17, 2020

Answer

Hello Pattee, There are 3 wires in the connector. the black is the 120V. The white is the neutral. The red wire is the communication wire. The signal from one unit will transmit over the red wire to the other units that are connected with the red wire.

I have several kidde smoke alarms wired throughout the house. Can this replace one of the smoke alarms and still work with the others?

You can’t mix combo smoke/CO2 with existing smoke only detectors. If the sensing capabilities are same maybe, but you may need to change the connector at the new unit if it is different.

Hello Jean, Thanks for reaching out. No, this is an ionization smoke and carbon monoxide detector. For photoelectric, you will want kn-cope-ic.

Package arrived in good condition. I liked there were plenty of different spaced holes in the base to fit most any electrical box for connecting to ceiling. Only needed to loosen two screws to remove the old base and install the new one. Using 3 screw type wire connectors, transferred one wire at a time from the old alarm connector to the new one without having to shut off electricity. And very easy to twist and lock the new alarm onto the base and get the battery opening in any position you want. Pressed the test button on each alarm and as soon as one would go off the other alarm went off too, both alarm and voice, just as advertised. Entire installation for both alarms took under 30 minutes from the time I got the ladder out, read the instruction an put the ladder away. And at 69 years old, I would say it was one the easiest jobs I performed on my house this year. I totally recommend this alarm for the price and ease of installation.

Very simple installation and testing procedures - took me 5 minutes to install. I like this product because it uses battery backup instead of running on batteries. It was a good solid 8 years before I had to replace the original Kidde I bought, so I do like the longevity of the product itself.

We have a house that was built in 1997 with 8 hard wired smoke detectors. I replaced 2 with the combo detector and 6 with Kidde smoke detectors. They were all an easy replacement, the existing connector could be reused on all 8. All 8 of the new Kidde detectors "talk" to each other, so if one goes off they all go off! So far so good, the self tests have worked great.

This was replacement for 10 year old unit, Kidde KN-COSM-IB (actually replaced two). Old connector did not quite fit into new unit. Had to install supplied connector. Battery for old unit (9V) required unit to be twisted CCW to open to access battery. New unit uses two 1.5V AA and are installed right under battery cover as shown in picture. Other than the battery differences they seem to be identical in operation.

Easy peasy installation and it works. What's not to like? However, it's only a few days old so the jury is still out on its long term performance. I purchased 2 replacing 2 7-yr old alarms and the old ones still had the original batteries. So, that's a good recommendation right there!

Great replacement for a FireX FADC 120-1182 smoke detector. Easy to install and almost “plug ‘n play”. After the changes in CA law requiring homes to have carbon monoxide detectors outside each bedroom, we decided to upgrade our original 2003 FireX hard wired smoke alarms with this combined CO/Smoke detector. The ion-based smoke detector is more sensitive than a typical detector as they sense smoke particles from a fast moving fire. In our case, we also used a couple of photoelectric sensor detectors which are better for sensing slow smoldering fires. Once installed, you can press the button to test the alarm. It sounds an 85 db alarm and also has a several helpful voice alerts: • If it detects fire, it will announce ‘Fire’ • If it detects carbon monoxide, it will announce ‘Warning, carbon monoxide’ • If the backup batteries run low and need replacing, it will announce ‘Low battery’ • If the alarm sounds, you can press the center button and it enters hush mode and announces ‘Hush mode activated’ • After 9 minutes had passed in Hush mode, the alarm resets and announces ‘Hush mode cancelled’ • If it detects carbon monoxide and is not reset, it will announce ‘Carbon monoxide previously detected’ to let you know in case you were out when the alarm went off. The detector also has an LED indicator which is green when the detector is working properly and then flashes red when the alarm activates or needs a new battery. The alarm also ‘chirps’ when the batteries is need replacing. Installation was easy. In our case, we have both circular and oblong electrical boxes in the ceiling that house the mains wiring for the detectors. Despite the fact that the detector mounting plates are different with the mounting plate on the new detector being larger, they are easy to switch over by loosening the two screws in the electrical box. The second aspect that is different is the electrical connector pigtail on the back of the detector. It still has three wires (hot, neutral and interconnect) and is also easy to change over. In my case I just had to disconnect the wire nuts and connect the new pigtail. Before mounting the detector on the ceiling it is easier if you insert the two AA backup batteries (included with the detector). The older alarms we replaced used a square 9v battery for backup. The unit is warrantied for 10 years and has a label on the side where you can write the installation month/year and the replacement month/year.
