Product Overview

The Kidde i12060A is an AC/DC powered, ionization smoke alarm that operates on a 120-Volt power source with 9-Volt battery backup. This alarm uses ionization sensing technology. Ionization sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric sensing alarms may detect visible particles (associated with smoldering fires) sooner than ionization alarms. The front-loading battery door allows user to change the battery without removing the alarm from the mounting bracket making battery replacement easy and convenient. The quick convert adapter allows the installation of a new Kidde alarm to an existing competitive wiring harness. This allows for easy installation when replacing the specified smoke alarm brands with a Kidde product.
  • Battery backup provides protection in case of power failure

I have an old FireX Model FXW-R . Is this model a replacement?

Asked by Ellis July 11, 2020

Answer

Hello Ellis, There is no replacement. Firex became part of Kidde in 2008 and their product was discontinued. That being said, all of the new units will come with a wiring harness and mounting bracket that will need to be installed. The new units are not compatible with the old ones.

The mounting plate is not compatible with most of the older models. It is very easy to loosen the mounting screws and replace the old mounting plate. It is just a quarter of a turn and the plate will come down.

I love the battery door right on the front of the unit. Easy to install new battery. This unit comes with adapters for replacing other brands of hardwired detectors. I had a First Alert unit that needed to be replaced, but it was so old that the adapters would not work. I had to wire in the new plug which was a bit disappointing since I paid extra for the unit with the adapters. The wall plate was not large enough to cover the old detectors footprint. This left a small area that needed some touch up paint to cover.

Mostly giving this a good rating for the price, which with these being on sale made it super worth the cost. The instructions aren’t super clear on how to replace them and they aren’t compatible with the ceiling docks from the previous model, so you have to remove the old docks and install the ones they provide in the packaging. Overall very easy and if you get confused just watch YouTube.

Bought to replace my original hardwired battery-back up alarms, these were the same in terms of the power connector style (and also came with an adapter), but wouldn't work with the original ceiling brackets, which was no big deal since they include new brackets, which were very easy to switch out. Once the new brackets were on, I did have to push on each unit pretty hard to get them to catch on the bracket, but it was doable. All in all, probably took about an 60-75 minutes to replace 5 of them (and that includes having to cut open some of the plastic packaging, which as we all know is ridiculously hard, leading one to wonder if the scissors are really that dull, if one's already beginning to lose strength with age, or why there are still so many non-recyclable, non-compostible materials being used when there are better alternatives)? Definitely recommend these smoke alarms. Hope they last at least the 9 years that the original alarms did before all deciding to start screaming at once for no reason until we disconnected them. I have a good neighbor, though, who immediately texted to ask if everything was okay. There are still good neighbors in the world who live in peace and look out for each other, regardless of political, ethnic and other differences. Oh, and the smoke alarms really are excellent for new or replacement installations. I would absolutely buy them again. I also appreciate that the little green light is less bright than on the original smoke alarms, because I had to stick blue tape on the original alarm light to prevent it from keeping me awake, but the glow on the new ones is more gentle, so doesn't keep me up). Great design and function!

I was disappointed that the adapters that were advertised were replaced with cheaper wire converters. I could barely fit it in the space available in the electrical box behind the smoke detector whereas the advertised adapters would have used a lot less room. I need to still replace 3 more and this time I have ordered the smoke detectors (Kidde i12060 - https://www.homedepot.com/p/Kidde-Hardwire-Smoke-Detector-with-Battery-Backup-Ionization-Sensor-and-2-Button-Test-Hush-21026054/303265877) separate from the adapters (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Kidde-Smoke-Alarm-Adapters-2-Pack-900-0153-012/202563783) and it is about the same cost. To be fair, it did the job, but it was more difficult than it needed to be.
