Questions & Answers

What extinguisher model does Kidde have that is effective for flammable liquids and electrical fire that is non corrosive sold at Home Depot
ByNov 21, 2025
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Hello. This extinguisher and all of our BC rated fire extinguishers use our regular dry chemical extinguishing agent powder that is 80% to 97% sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda, with 1% to 5% of calcium carbonate which is a calcium based soda powder, 1% to 5% Mica which is a stone or dust contaminant, and 0.1% to 1% clay soil which is another contaminant. On any page of the Kidde website, go to the bottom of the page and under Support you will see Safety Data Sheets. Click on that and find the Regular Dry Chemical and click on that. That will take you to the page that describes in detail how corrosive and how safe the regular dry chemical powder we use in our B:C rated fire extinguishers. Our ABC fire extinguishers use a different powder and their safety data sheets can be found there as well. B rated fires are flammable liquid fuel fires and C rated fires are electrical fires so B:C extinguishers are only rated for putting out flammable liquids and electrical fires and not A rated trash and wood and paper fires but they don't have a powder that melts and smothers and corrodes surfaces when they get heated by fires.

Hello. If you are talking about electric car and electric vehicle batteries, then no. Putting out electric vehicle battery fires are very difficult. Talk to your local fire department about how to avoid electric vehicle battery fires and what to do if they occur.

Hi Kevin. Thank you for shopping at the Home Depot. Replace your fire extinguisher if the gauge reads “EMPTY,” immediately after use or if 12 years old. 80% of residential fire extinguishers sold today are single-use extinguishers that cannot be recharged. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. Rick_HD_OC

Hello. As long as the pin and tie remain intact and the gauge is in the green, these extinguishers are good for 12 years from the year stamped on the bottom of the extinguisher.

Hello. The powder in the extinguisher is non-toxic and safe to degree listed in the safety data sheet on the Kidde website, under the Support tab, under Safety Data sheets, and under the Regular Dry Chemical Safety Data Sheet. The main component is baking soda, sodium bicarbonate, with small amounts of calcium carbonate, mica, clay, and random dust present.

                              Saved from a kitchen fire!
Very impressed with this fire extinguisher! The toaster in my kitchen caught fire and the flames were really tall. We were seconds from a full-blown kitchen fire. I had this fire extinguisher mounted nearby to the garage wall and was able to quickly detach and grab it. One single puff and the flames were completely extinguished. I'm buying 2 more to have one on every floor in the house.

The Kidde 5-B:C Rated Disposable Fire Extinguisher was a purchase made for pure safety sakes. This was a good deal for my and my families safety. I have not used this and hopefully will not need to so it's hard to say how it works, but the product looks good and looks to be high quality. There is also an included hanger.

No brainer. When it comes to smoke alarms, Carbon Monoxide detectors or the brakes on your car - it's all the same thing. You get them to save your life and the lives of others "because yu never know". These fire extinguishers work. Also, Just because you have one in a kitchen cabinet somewhere - check it - they don't last forever. Make sure that the needle is in the green but even if it is... If it's been like 10 -15 years since you bought it go to Home Depot and replace it. For $15-$20 it's worth it a million times over.

                                Good price .
Bought one and place it in the garage just in case . Only thing not happy with that is the mounting kit are trash , made by cheap plaste , can't hold very well . Did research same brand mounting kit don't fit very well also . At the end home make one by 2x4 lumber from last project and some aluminum bar , total cost $3 , now it look very handsome :)
