Questions & Answers

Are there a lot of false alarms for the explosive gas component of model KN-COEG-3?

Asked by: SuzyQ
My experience after 2 months of use is NO false alarms....I have located it in a small furnace room that contains both a natural gas furnace and natural gas water heater. As for placing it in the furnace room when the instructions say not to place in furnace rooms--It was my only common sense option in the raised ranch home.-----In any event if i had a gas leak and had placed the detector in an upstairs location or down stairs bedroom far from the furnace and incoming gas lines It may be tooooo late as the gas would never reach the detector in time.... Am I missing something by placing It in the furnace room for earliest possible detection of a gas leak? Agan,I have had NO false alarms and like the units, but you must take time and educate yourself thru the instructions.

What ppm of carbon monoxide is this sensor able to detect?

We've been researching and it appears there was a law passed disallowing residential carbon monoxide detectors to measure CO below 30 ppm. We are concerned about chronic low-level CO exposure. Also, at what level does the alarm go off?
Asked by: FreshAir
Looks like the question has been answered, but something's amiss. If the Kidde expert is correct, then this model has been redesigned. My 2007 unit with the exact same model number and the exact same case design detects and displays down to 11PPM (Peak memory) -- this capability is specified in the manual.

How many decibels does the alarm sound at, and how many feet away can you hear it?

Asked by: Blackjack
Propane is heavier than air, so I believe that it would need to be closer to the floor level with that particular gas. Natural gas is lighter than air.

Used this purchase to prove to to my hypochondriac wife that we did mot have a gas leak in our house. She still didn't believe me. The gas company had to prove what your detector was telling us. Great product anyway.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works possibly too well... Goes off every time my dog farts near it. No punchline to that. Would be cool if it could tell the difference between explosive gas and... dog gas.

Where you position it depends upon the gas you are primarily trying to detect. I did not know that natural gas rises to the top of the ceiling, and for this they recommend the detector be placed within a foot or so of the ceiling, so you might need a plug installed or use an extension cord, which is not very convenient. For carbon monoxide detection, CO tends to layer first near the floor, so ideally the detector would be placed at a plug above the baseboard, which is convenient. Bottom line, if you plug it in on a regular plug above the baseboard it is not an optimal location to detect natural gas.
