Q:Are these up to code in maryland
by|Mar 24, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question
A: Hello. Before purchasing smoke alarms, please contact your local authority requiring smoke alarms to find out your state, county, and local city fire codes and to find out exactly what kind of smoke alarms you are required to have and where you are required to have them. To our knowledge at Kidde, the state code was, as of 2018: Effective Date: July 1, 2013: 10-Year Sealed Battery Smoke Alarm Requirement: Battery operated smoke alarms shall be replaced with 10-year sealed battery alarms when the alarm exceeds 10 years from date of manufacture, fails to respond to operability tests, or when there is a change of ownership or tenant. Power Source Requirement: - Battery operated alarms are permissible in homes built before July 1, 1975. Other homes must contain hardwired alarms. If there are new placement requirements, battery operated alarms are permissible. - As of Jan. 1, 2018 ALL battery operated smoke alarms shall be upgraded to 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms. New Placement Requirement - Smoke alarms must now be placed on every level of the home and in each sleeping area. This alarm does have the 10 year sealed lithium battery that is required but your county or local fire codes may require more. Please contact your authority.

Solved: false alarms
Like others, mine would sometimes go off for no reason. Apparently the mounting holes from the previous detector were getting dust into the sensor.
I have had no issues since I filled the old holes in the wall behind the sensor.
I would have given this 5 stars if the instructions said to fill any holes from a previous unit.
Hello. Thank you for your review. Let us know at 1-800-880-6788 if there are questions or issues we can hep you with.

Failed in 13 months!
I was happy to get what I thought was an alarm that had a "10-year life." Sadly, that life was cut short. :-( After only 13 months, it started with the 3 long beeps indicating smoke detection, which was (thankfully) erroneous. Trash!

Couldn't turn it off
Why do these smoke detectors always fail in the middle of the night? We've only had this unit a few months, and it went off at 4 am. We couldn't turn it off! We had to hit it with a hammer and cut the wires just to make sure it would shut up.
Hello mercedes, Thanks for reaching out. There is an area on the back of the unit that you break through the label and puncture the back label. This will reveal a plastic "screw" that you turn counter clockwise to disengage the battery. Please call Kidde support at 1-800-880-6788 Open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM EST Saturday 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM EST. They're the experts and will be able to assist. Thank you.

Well, the good part is the detectors did not catch fire....
I inspect and replace smoke detectors in apartment buildings.
I have boxes and boxes of this detector, dead. On some units the ten year battery seems to last about three years.
The test beep goes on too long as well.

Not good long term near bathrooms
Bought two 2-packs, one for each level of the house. The ones in the basement, lower level (entertainment area), main level (kitchen, dining, living rooms) are all just fine. A couple cooking-related false alarms, no big deal. The one on the upper level (bedrooms, main bathroom) started going off for no reason. Sometimes it would go off for a little bit and stop. Other times it kept going for several minutes before i could find a stick to press the "hush" button. Then it would silence for ~10 mins and start again. After waking up twice to it last night and again this morning as i was sitting on the toilet, i decided to pull it down, turn it off and buy a new, different brand. I looked at the date we had written on there. We installed in Oct. 2017, and I'm going to replace it now, Sept. 2020. Almost 3 years. Not bad, really. Just wish it would've lasted 10 years as advertised. We had a First Alert for ~10 years. It went off a few times, all due to cooking (a couple were due to someone falling asleep while cooking, so that saved us). We replaced with a newer First Alert detector that lasted another 10 years. Then i saw these on sale at Home Depot. Being familiar with Kidde because i've had a couple fire extinguishers of theirs, i decided to get them. After this incident, i'm going back to First Alert.

Tricky to silence
Installed in '17, failed today. Could not be silenced until I figured out how. You might need a hammer, but my foot worked fine.

Hello Carl, Nuisance alarms, particularly in the middle of the night, are caused by something interfering with the sensor. These units are looking for particles of combustion, so when a small insect or piece of dust gets into the sensor (*located inside of the unit) the unit will interpret this as smoke particles. We recommend using compressed air, through the side vents/ bug screen and blowing out/cleaning the alarm really well.

Hello. That is unusual. Are the alarms in a location that get especially cold or especially hot like a garage, attic, or crawl space? That can affect the sensor. Call us with these 4 alarms in hand at 1-800-880-6788 or contact us at https://www.kidde.com/home-safety/en/us/support/help-center/submit-a-question/ with details about what the sounded like when giving the warning and let us troubleshoot this and see what we can do for you about these alarms. We'd like to help you.

I purchased 6 kiddi 10 yr smoke detectors. Very easy to install and glad that I don't have to change the batteries for 10 yrs
I only wish it included the carbon dioxide detector with them especially for how much they cost.
2-In-1 Smoke and Fire Alarm Detector Hardwired 10-Year Sealed Battery Backup Microprocessor Technology
The USI Electric Hardwired Smoke and Fire Alarm uses patented Universal Smoke Sensing Technology to respond quickest to BOTH fast-flaming fires and slow smoldering fires to protect your family against deadly threats in the home. U.S.S.T. provides the benefits of both photoelectric and ionization alarms in 1 device. Perfect for new or replacement installations, the 120-Volt AC hardwired alarm is suitable for houses, apartments and mobile homes. This alarm is fully interconnectable with all USI and Universal 120-Volt alarms using existing wiring and mounting. Quick Find alarm origination identifies the first alarm to sound in an interconnected system and the single silence/test button temporarily quiets nonemergency alarms. Auto sensitivity calibration also provides superior nuisance alarm protection and creates consistency in alarm sensitivity. This alarm has additional automatic features including a self-diagnostics check and a sensitivity adjustment for changes in temperature or humidity. The USI Electric MI106S Hardwired 2-in-1 Universal Smoke Sensing Technology Smoke and Fire Smart Alarm comes with a 10-year Permanent Power tamper-proof sealed battery continues protection in the event of a power outage.
The Kidde i9010 is a 10-year, sealed battery operated smoke alarm featuring Hush, Alarm Memory, and a self-activation mechanism that makes installation simple and easy. This package contains 3 Kidde 10 Year Lithium battery alarms in convenient, easy to open box. The alarm will automatically activate when it is attached to the mounting bracket; there are no pull-tabs, no switches--everything is automatic. The sealed-in board-mounted battery will power the i9010 unit for its complete 10-year life. No replacement battery will ever be needed, and an End of Life alert indicates when it is time to replace the alarm. At the end of the alarm's 10-year life, deactivation of the alarm is just as easy. Using a tool such as a small screwdriver, a deactivation switch removes power from the alarm and renders the battery safe for disposal. As an added safety mechanism, the alarm lockout feature prevents a deactivated unit from being mounted back on the mounting bracket. The i9010 also features Hush technology, allowing consumers to temporarily silence nuisance alarms, and an Alarm Memory feature that alerts the user via rapidly flashing LED lights if the alarm has sounded since the last time the test/reset button was used. This alarm uses ionization sensing technology. Ionization sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with flaming fires).
