Questions & Answers

What happens after the ten year battery wears out? Do you throw the whole unit away and purchase another one?

Asked by: AngieAAB
yes, Angie, and only use UL / NFPA recommended ones. most retail outlets only sell them. also don't compromise price for quality ( its not worth the safety risk)

Where do you mount these alarms?

On the ceiling? Wall? Do they need to be up high in the room? Do you need an electrical source for them?
Asked by: Wade6
Look on the web site for (or call) Your Local Fire Department. They should have a list of approved locations, quantity and other information regarding the placement and locations of fire alarms (and how many combination smoke & CO alarms) are required in your home.

Is it wired into the house? Does it meet or exceed all building codes?
Asked by: Doug
10 years is pretty much the limit on the technology. ( much like a car or smart phone) they should be replaced at least after 10 yrs, or malfunction.) it is NOT recommended that you replace the power source at the end of that period, but replace the unit. most of us recommend that when you replace the device, place a date on the inside, so you, ( or if you move) the next occupant, knows when they were installed.

Does the product list anywhere the year it will expire, or do you need to make note of this itself and/or just wait for the day it chirps on you?
Asked by: Dodo
You need to make your own note of expiration on the unit or package.

Last night it went off in the middle of the night and could not be silenced. This model is disposable, meaning the battery cannot be changed. In other words, the battery cannot be accessed, because the unit cannot be disassembled. On the underside of the unit, there is a layer of card stock, which must be penetrated with a screwdriver to disable the battery. Once the battery is disabled, the unit must be disposed. Horrible design, especially considering how often it gives a false alarm.

This purchase - a single unit, not a 3 pack - was to replace a Kidde 10 year detector that was purchased about 3 years ago and went bad beeping constantly in the absence of any smoke and after blowing it out. However, when I called Kidde they asked for the model number and date of manufacture (found on the unit) and immediately offered to send a replacement unit. A rating of "1" for failing after only 3 years, a "5" for customer service.

I purchased this exact Kitchen smoke detector/carbon monoxide alarm and installed it 1/24/15. On 10/27/17 @ around 9:30 am the alarm went off and we could not get it to stop. There was no reason for it to go off. We broke open the unit and cut the wires. It was still flashing red when we did that and continued to do so until late that evening. I see another person has complained about this product. I am going to call the manufacturer about this. I have returned both of mine - kitchen and hallway, and went to battery smoke detector. I think the manufacturer needs to take a look at this and figure out what the problem is. I for one would not want to be woken up in thek middle of the night for a false alarm.

Seemed great -- easy install, no replacing batteries when they run out in the middle of the night. Right? WRONG. After a year one of them started going off for no reason. Did I mention this was in an infant's room? That was fun. The next one to go was in my toddler's room. We had to disable the whole thing at 1AM this morning. We will never buy this brand again. I'm happy going back to changing batteries. Seriously, these are not worth the trouble and they WILL go off for no reason in the middle of the night.

I purchased this smoke detector in Dec of 2014 at the Home Depot. Last night it went off at 2 AM for no reason. The "Hush" button did not "Hush" the chirping (3 long beeps, 1 second pause, repeating). After a half an hour, I finally disabled it with a screw driver on the back. This permanently disables the detector so now it is inoperable and can't be enabled again. I should have read the reviews before this purchase. I see this is a common problem with the P3010K-CO Kidde Smoke Detector.

Just installed these yesterday; good instructions but the tiny screws provided are easy to strip if you're going into any kind of wood other than pine, so if there's a chance you'll have to reinstall to meet code (like I did) maybe plan accordingly. Check your fire codes first, kids! Sadly there was no sheetrock or drywall in the house so I couldn't use the easy one-and-done option but it sure looked good. Obviously I have no idea how well these will perform, but I hope they're excellent for the sake of the people buying our house. :)

I haven't had them long enough, especially anywhere close to ten years to see if that's how long they last. The give you one very easy ceiling/wall center connector with the hardware that makes them easy to install and I had all five up within the hour. Then simply by locking them in it turns them on and then go through the testing procedure. Read the suggested locations as for the best locations for the four different varieties in the pack. I'm amazed at the original date of my old ones and would be seriously surprised if they had worked in a fire. Worthe the money for the peace of mind and the basic need of all but testing and cleaning monthly without replacing batteries come every Daylights savings change.
