They are easy to remove. The wood is soft. I did shave a little wood off on a corner or two, but I think it is possible to do it without any damage. It would be a good precaution to take the screen off too.

How do I get a window insert for this dood. 36x

Go to a local hardware store and get a piece of glass cut to size. Set into space where screen was. Product comes with two little holders, presumably to help keep the middle of the screen from flexing out. Use those holders and maybe 6 more to hold glass in place. Warning: Not sure it the slamming of door and flexing will cause glass to break. I personally would take the chance.

what tool do you use to loosen the screws to remove the screen

Funny you should ask. I bought a red case of about 30 bits: drill bits, screw bits, and random stuff a year or so ago, probably from Home Depot, for cheap. In it were about 4 four-sided bits, like allen keys (hex keys). One of those fit for this product.

How do you remove the screen?

You need a "drill" bit that is like an allen key. It is 4 sided though, not 6. I bought a case of about 30 bits from HD years ago and they are in there.

I have ordered several screens from Ace Hardware over the years, in custom sizes.

53 1/8 " It does vary, though, by where you measure from.

Beautiful door. It seems well made. There were some minor aesthetic defects, but given it’s a rustic door, was not a problem for me. As you can see in the photo, I removed the decorative pieces in the corners of the screen-it was fairly easy to do (10-15min). I used a thin putty knife and hammer. Recommend doing it slowly and at the right angle because the wood is very soft.

We knew the door needed to be stained, but it also needed to be sanded, a lot. it was very rough just about everywhere. There was a glue stain on the wood that we didn't notice until after we stained it (see pic). It was pretty deep and right in the middle of the front side, so we had to re-sand again, very deeply this time, in order to try to get it out. It took a long time, much more labor intensive than it should have been.

Nice Door
I love this door but it does have a slight bow at the top that keeps it from closing flush as it should. What are these screws and plastic pieces that came with the door?

Looks good but poorly built
When I first opened the box I was happy with how the door looked. It's made from clear cedar and has a great design, however after taking a closer look I became disappointed. First there was a crack in rail at the bottom but that was easy enough to fix with wood glue and a clamp. When I put a T-square on the door I discovered the door was out of square. fortunately I needed to cut it down anyway so I was able to trim down at the top and bottom to fix this. That's 2 repairs on an expensive door. If this wasn't bad enough the whole door is warped out of shape about 1/2". The instruction sheet says a warp of 3/8" is not considered a defect. Well that was left out of the product description. It's a good looking door but unless you have some serious woodworking skills you will not be happy. This is NOT a door you can buy and just mount in place right out of the box.

Quality Screen Door
I stained the door and it turned out beautiful. Being able to remove the screen was helpful. It added a lot of character to my porch.

This is my second purchase of this product. The first one warped so badly that it was unusable, it was returned. I really like the design, and the fact that it is solid cedar, so I ordered another one. This time, before staining, I clamped it down to a heavy, true, solid core door for 2 1/2 weeks before attempting to do anything with it. I had it outside during this process, covered with a tarp, so it had a chance to acclimate to our climate. That seemed to do the trick. It took much longer, and was more work, than I expected (had to modify the door jamb), but in the end it was worth it. Very pleased with the door overall now.

Seemed like a handsome, rustic cedar door (does not finely sanded). Sort of calls for staining but I couldn't get a stain mix to a color that would work with the house's color scheme, so ended up priming and painting. Installer was here working on another door this a.m. and advised the front entrance needed some extra attention prep work to accommodate this wooden screen door. Thank god I didn't sink any more money into it as then I noticed two major cracks in diagonal corners involving both top and bottom. So this door will be getting returned and I am disgusted I wasted so many hours with double coats of primer and paint on it. Can not recommend it at all. Other reviews note issues with the wood splitting too but I was hoping for better experience..
