Questions & Answers

I have seen the text for some fish tapes "3/16 ln" . What might this mean and how does it compare?

Asked by: Roy
The 3/16" inch refers to the width of the tape, to give you an idea of where it might (or might not) fit. This fiberglass tape is about the same width overall.

This 100’ multi-groove fiberglass fish tape and case really worked well in running ½” coaxial cable in 4” conduits that were about 90’ in length. I liked the new grooved finish on the tape. It really did reduce friction in running the tape through the conduits. I never had a snag even though I had multiple cables in each conduit. The tape retracts easily, and the case handle (see picture) is comfortable to hold. The tape has a 7” metal spring lead with eye hook (see picture) for your pull string to attach. The metal spring lead had just the right amount of stiffness and flexibility to get by existing cable in the conduit. Klein really thought of everything in designing this tool. I am very pleased with how this works, and, as someone who has worked running coaxial cables over 40 years, I highly recommend it!

Here's a multiple grooves fiberglass fish tape designed to have less friction with a 7 in. spiral steel leader. What that all means is, that it's easy to push it thought conduit and with the 7 in. leader bends easier around bends in the conduit. Also the tip helps when adding a new wire run within a existing run, it penetrates, and being fiberglass your less likely to get shocked, but remember the 7in. leader is a flexible metal. (As a note of safety, you should always shut of the power to the area your working!) Now I've had many of the older fish tapes, flat, hard wire and they always stopped at bends, you have to push, pull turn and just play with them till they final pushed pass, sometimes they don't and you have to try from the other end. And the flat ones had to be fed in just right so that they could bend at the corners or out they came and start over. Here with this design, it's more flexible, the tips are not hand metal that could cut or otherwise damage wires and that 7in tip is even more flexible so there still some push and pull, but very little. I've have not used it but once now, but somethings don't take to long to figure that they just work better and here's one.

Klein Multi-Groove Fiberglass Fish Tape is another professional product that is offered by Klein tools. I was immediately impressed on how light the wire puller is with a fiberglass rod instead of the typical steel fish tape. There is a lot of advantages for this fiberglass fish tape. The big advantage besides weight is that the fiberglass tapes does not rust, and the steel will rust. You will also notice the fish tape slides much easier in longer runs than steel without lube. Another advantage is for measuring conduit runs prior to the actual wire pull. The fiberglass is easy to read or see pencil marks for verifying cutting multiple wires prior to pull. I liked that it already has the spring flexible lead to tip installed to help negotiating curves and bends in the conduit without having to purchase separately. After using in several underground conduit situations, the fish tape cleans easily with a quick wipe. Just a great all-around weather tool. Photos show wire pulling and the comparison between a standard Klein steel fish tape and the new Klein Fiberglass fish tape.

It was early in the morning and I had just made my first cast when a large mouth hit the lure...WAIT! WAIT! It's not a fish tale. It's a fish tape. OK. Let's try again. I had to move a 10G line across an exterior doorway to the other side. That involved getting the line from the old box, up the wall, across a header, and down the other side to the new box. It may sound fishy, but this worked wonderfully. I have a smaller metal tape, but I felt that the fiberglass would be make the job easier. I did not undo all my work to try with the metal tape so I could make a realistic comparison. But the job was certainly easily done with this tape. I have yet to do any long runs thru conduit. I am very pleased with this tape's performance and I am glad to have it.

For many years I have used the classic spring-metal type fish tape, the kind where the end is bent into a J shape that tends to catch on things as you pull it in. This fiberglass fish tape is not only exceptionally easy to reel in and out, but the last foot or so is a round flexible metal part with an "eye" for attaching wire at the end. It is flexible and easy to maneuver. The grooved fiberglass main portion doesn't catch on things and pushes through obstructions (such as bundles of wires) easily.
