I can tell you it slices through high-grade 3/8" chain and should have no problem with 1/2" cuts. I tweaked a 24" off-brand cutter on 3/8" chain so buy a tool rated for the thickest steel you think you’ll ever cut..

The KLEIN 42 INCH BOLT CUTTERS WITH STEEL HANDLES, are very strong, and quite heavy as well. So far I have had to cut a chain, that was only 1/8 inch, but these bolt cutters cut the chain like it was nothing ! Then, I had to cut the head off of a 4 inch bolt that was 3/16 inch in diameter. Again, not real big, but these bolt cutters cut it with no problem at all ! Truthfully I was very impressed with them. The 42 inch length of these bolt cutters definitely give you the leverage you want. And they are ALL steel, which does make them somewhat heavy, but you can tell they are strong !!

I have an old 3/8" O.D. thickness chain with a heavily rusted 3/8" O.D. threaded quick link chain coupler, at it's end. This 19 pound Klein Tools 42" in. bolt cutter monster, made quick work of cutting the quick link off the chain. It also had no problem cutting a link off the 3/8" O.D. thickness chain. The 42" overall length of the bolt cutter provided all the leverage I needed. The cutting surface on the jaws was not dinged, marred, or damaged in any way, even after I cut a section of 1/2" O.D. rebar. In order to cut the 1/2" O.D. high temper steel rebar, I had to lay one handle on the ground & then push down with the other handle to employ the force necessary to shear off a section of rebar. On the other hand I easily cut a section of 3/8" & 5/8" O.D. Aluminum strand electrical wire & a section of 10-2 electrical wire, like it was cutting through butter. I have a ventilated farm shop, but the Vinyl grips on the handles didn't transfer the Winter cold temperature, from the steel handles. Also, the Vinyl grips were comfortable to hold, while working with the bolt cutter. The cutting jaws adjustment is right on the handle, near the cutting head & very easy to adjust with an open end wrench. This is a powerfully great tool!

This thing is a beast. The handles measure 63 in when opened to their widest position (see photo). When closed, the handles measure 7 in wide and the top/black portion 5 in wide. The depth/thickness comes in at 2 1/8 in thick for black portion. The product is actually 42 5/8 in long. When fully open, the jaws are 1 1/8 in at the tips and 1/4 in at the base. Action is very smooth. These are adjustable per the instructions in the photo on the handle. You can cut up to 11/16 soft materials and 1/2 in hard, so rebar should not be an issue.

The Klein 42 inch bolt cutter with steel handles are heavy duty at 19.2 lbs. and 42 inches long and they can cut soft material up to 11/16 inch (18 mm) and hard material up to 1/2 inch (13 mm). This has cut everything I tried it on with ease and if you ever do wear out the cutter head you can order a new one part number 63842. These are a great addition to your tool collection and should last the average homeowner.

Just another quality product from Klein that really can get the job done. super smooth to use and really can cut through the hard metals up to 1/2 inch thick. the length of the cutters allows you to really get the leverage you will need to cut through the hard metal and the jaws are high quality so will be able to take the repeated cuts without showing much damage. The handles are very nice and make holding the cutters easy and comfortable which is important with something that weighs in at over 20lbs. I really do not have something bad to say about these cutters. Klein clearly knows how to make a good set of cutters that will stand up to whatever is thrown at it. Opening and closing is very smooth and holds in place when closed.

Yes this is a quality product. Yes I would recommend this product but with a disclaimer. You need to realize that it is LARGE bolt cutter. It is 42" long and weighs over 21 lbs. Now if I was just carrying it as an object no problem. But to use it as a tool to cut bolts, locks etc it is hard. It cuts well and will snap any lock or bolt easily up to 3/8" or more. But it is much more difficult to use because of it size and weight than a smaller tool that will probably do the same job. It isn't really practical for a DIYer like me.

On the small size for bolt cutting. I received this bolt cutter for free to write this review. If you need a portable bolt cutter for smaller applications, these are for you. The max it can cut are 5/16" soft and 3/16" hardened. If the cutters are going to live in your garage I would go with something bigger and has better leverage. I tried cutting a cheap hardened steel lock. These barely dented the lock but did damage the cutter blade. (See pictures). They work fine on bolts and rebar.
