Awesome tool.. must have for punch downs.....
Awesome tool.. must have for punch downs..

Why didn't someone do this sooner?
Just plain awesome and an innovative design! While the rubberized grip is comfortable I think what makes this punch down tool the most comfortable is the round handle as opposed to the blocky trapezoidal shape of most other impact punch down tools. It doesn't matter if you're punching down a vertically mounted 110 block, a horizontally mounted patch panel or a keystone jack in your hand or on the floor the VDV427-821 always feels right in your hand. It is the only impact punch down tool I'm aware of that has this type of handle. Klein has another punch down tool with a screwdriver type handle but it doesn't have the impact feature. The other one is nice if you want to have a combination screwdriver/punch down tool for quick jack repairs but as far as impact punch down tools go, I think this is the best one out there. Not to be overlooked as far as reducing fatigue is the blade. Klein makes really high quality punch down blades and the ones that comes with this tool appears to be an improved new model. All the Cat5e terminations I've done with this tool only required one punch to seat and trim off the excess cable. The only exception was on some keystone jacks but I found if you angle the tool slightly towards the cut side that issue is solved. The blades also stay sharp and hold up for many uses. This is very important. If you're punching down a 24 port patch panel you're punching down 192 wires not including the other end of the cable. Even if you only to double punch every third wire that's still a lot of unnecessary strain especially if you're terminating multiple dozens or hundreds of cables a day. The extra long shaft makes it easy to see what you're doing and helps you navigate through the mess of spaghetti wiring that might have been done by a previous installer. I recently had to punch down some phone wires on a block that was mounted near the ceiling while standing on a stool about 4 feet away and found the VDV427-822 punch down tool made it easy to reach and see what I was doing. The standard shape impact punch down tool might only have one advantage that I can think of and it's a minor one. I think it's easier to control because the end of the blade is closer to your hand. Once you get used to the new Klein style though that shouldn't be an issue and once you have the blade on the first notch in the IDC it's very fast to jump to the next one with this tool. Especially since you have greater visibility. Other than the shape of the handle it has all the features you'd expect from a punch down tool. Accepts standard twist-lock blades, is color coded (yellow for cut side red for non-cut side) and has a low and high force setting. You'll mainly be using it on the low setting except if you're punching down 23 gauge or thicker wire on a 66 block. The VDV Cushion Grip punch down tool comes with one blade that is reversible for either 110 or 66 style connectors. It's easy to twist the blade on or off but it stays secure while in use. It will accept other standard twist-lock blades. You may want to keep a spare (VDV427-104) or get cut/non-cut blade (VDV427-015-SEN for 110 and VDV427-016 for 66) if you need to do any daisy chaining. The kit includes the punch down tool, 110/66 cut blade, hook/spudger tool and sheath. The spudger works well to help you position wires, clear debris (wire trimmings, etc) from blocks and to help you remove terminated wires. The sheath is very well thought out. As a DIYer who is working on completely different types of projects from one weekend to the next I like having small toolsets ready to clip on my belt or toolbelt for specialty projects so I don't have to carry a lot of tools around. Everything you'll need to terminate twisted pair cables can fit in the sheath. There's a small pocket with a velcro secured flap that can store at least 2 extra punch down blades. It's also a good spot to store the blade's protective rubber tip so you can put it back on at the end of the day to help keep the blade sharp. Also on the front, behind the flapped pocket, is an open pocket that's the perfect spot to slide in a pair of wire cutters, needle nose pliers or better yet a pair Klein's electrician scissors so you can terminate cables like a pro. I uploaded a picture with regular scissors to give you an idea of what it would look like fully set up because those are still on my wish list. On each side of the sheath are two spots where you can insert either the spudger or a screwdriver. Personally I like to keep the spudger in the main pouch behind the punch down tool because it's more secure and I can bring a phillips and flat screwdriver with me in just one sheath. I thought it would be hard to get at the different tools with so many tools in such a small pouch but surprisingly everything was easy to access. The punch down tool and sheath appear to be well made from quality materials. I really like the shape of the handle and long reach. If you've enjoyed using Klein's Punch Down Screwdriver Multi-tool, you're going to love having those similar ergonomics in an impact version.

Bad spring
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have bought 2 of these now. I love the shape and size for confined cabinets and racks but the spring keeps breaking. This is with the impact setting on low. I don’t use high because of cheap patch panels but that’s a different story.

Not a PROFESSIONAL product!!!
Not a PROFESSIONAL product! 1st one only lasted 2 months of one a week use, 2nd one 4 minths of even less use before it stopped punching just like the 1st one. I have had other brands for YEARS & all still work. Klein has really gobe downhill I guess. I will return this one & definitely NOT buy it again
