i used staple free and had no issues what so ever. didn't need support of any kind. easier to install. installed in slanted peak in my attic.

Yes it can be used for a ceiling, but you may find the kraft paper glued off center, making stapling on one side a challenge. HD= High Density. Not always thicker. R means resistance to heat flow. Since this is HD it doesn't have to be much thicker than R-19 its just more dense so you get that R-21 Rating
All insulation should be tightly butted together. If you have a tear in the kraft facing, you should cover with a foil tape.
