Questions & Answers

Do I have to use specific screws?

I'm new to woodworking but do I have to use specific screws or will just wood screws work with this to build a small end table with light wood?
Asked by: Kevin
to me this is a definite yes. you need a smooth shank on the screw to be able to pull the opposing board tightly. you can find other choices on the internet. look under pocket hole screws. any screw will probably work buy you won't be happy with the results.

Is this in store

Asked by: Tony
I picked mine up at my local Home Depot, but I would check quantities online, and give the store a call to verify before driving out there.

The price was reasonable and this was a great purchase. The directions for use and ease of use were exceptional. I have found other projects to use this since I received it. I consider myself a home handyman and found this to be a great addition to my tool box. The loft bed that we made is for a 17 year old high school junior and he can take it with him to college in the future. I feel secure that the screw connections made with the jig will satisfy the strength required to support him. The loft bed also increased the useable floor space in his bedroom and allows him more places to put his 'stuff'. Also, buy kiln dried lumber like we used and the bed will be much better. BTW: a c-clamp was sufficient to retain the jig when we used it.

On soft woods like pine, you do have to be careful not to over-tighten the screws. I do glue anyway. I read some of the complaints. About "plastic," on first use, the directions are clear about excess plastic being stripped away. About "should be aluminum not cheap plastic", the whole point of plastic is to create a tight, smooth, non-dulling channel for the bit, I found that all worked as advertised. On "difficult to adjust," I'm simply confused. Press the tabs on the sides in far enough, everything clicks securely into place at the measurements. Have patience, drill slowly and smoothly, screw carefully, works like a charm.

It produced a strong joint that was easy to obtain. I had bought the Kreg Automaxx clamp which I had to trade the original for another because the first did not work. Home Depot personnel were very helpful and was quick to replace the defective tool. The clamp with the jig made doing the pocket holes very easy and accurate. A lot easier than doing a mortise and tenon joint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must for the beginner and the advanced builder! As a self-taught female woodworker this little tool has opened up endless possibilities to me. I started by deciding to build the farm table I have always wanted to buy but couldn't afford. This little tool opened up the world of woodworking to me. With it the complexity and intimidation of building is gone. With a good plan and this little jig I can conquer any project! Pocket holes eliminate the intimidation of complex joinery and this jig makes gauging and drilling them a piece of cake!! Since my farm table I have gone on to build at least 13 other projects for my self and have commissions coming in for farm tables....all thanks to this little tool!!

My oversized shelf model is holding so far. That said, the clamp is kind of necessary and we had to make an extra trip back to get it. It really shouldn't be sold without the clamp.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Portable Little Jig I got this one instead of the more expensive one because I wanted it to be portable. If you're mainly working on a workbench then get the more expensive one because once you buy this jig and the face clamp, it's almost the same prive as the bench mounted one which has a clamp built in and vacuum attachment. The jig works great and produces clean pocket holes that creat strong joints. Make sure you buy the right length pocket screws for the thickness of the material you're using or it'll poke through the back of the material.

I bought this to make 3 bookshelves and it performed great. Note that this is for thinner pieces of wood only - up to 1 3/4" thick. Make sure you have a clamp that fits and is wide enough for your wood. Mine didn't work right so I just held it down with my hand and it worked fine. I found that pocket holes are more secure than plain screws, especially if you're working with plywood or MDF. If you want to do any Ana White projects, this is a must.
