The Obsidian touchscreen electronic deadbolt is a keywayless, low-profile, one-touch locking motorized deadbolt. With your personalized code, you can enter your home with the convenience of keyless entry and the LED illumination provides increased visibility. It features patented SecureScreen technology to prevent code detection from fingerprints on the touchscreen. Obsidian is easy to install, program and use, and operates on 4 AA batteries. This deadbolt can be locked or unlocked by using the keypad from the outside as well as the turn button from the inside. The Venetian Bronze finish is hand-rubbed to reveal unique bronze highlights and provides a rich and warm complement to the product's style.

Can this be used on an exterior door?

AnswerYes, the Obsidian and Halifax passage lever can be installed on a front entry door. For the electronic lock, the interior should be enclosed and protected from the outside elements, while the touchscreen can face the exterior. Kwikset finishes are tested for durability in all weather conditions. Additionally, a new Kwikset product is backed by a Lifetime finish warranty to the original purchaser and end-user of the product.
What is the battery life

AnswerKwikset model #953OBN15SMTCDRC has a battery life of 6-12 months depending on the brand of batteries being used. Kwikset recommends you use top of the line batteries and make sure they are Alkaline only. The Obsidian model also has a 9Volt battery insert on the exterior if in case batteries ever die on the lock.

The lock is great looking, but you need to replace battery almost every two weeks or lock works spastically. This is frustrating and the lock was expensive. It looks beautiful. High maintenance.
We have had it a year. We also have a Schlage lock and battery only needs to be changed once a year. I would recommend that one.

Purchased this lock about a week ago. It's a beautifully designed keyless deadbolt. I had considered going with a lock that is connected to other apps in the home (Ring, Alexa) but decided the headaches with connectivity and integration weren't worth it.
Plus, since I have Ring, I can just give people the code to enter.
This lock was super easy to install and looks great on my door. Pairs nicely with the Montreal handles made by Kwisket.
I've received a lot of compliments on this lock and it's "wife approved".

Great lock! Easy to install. Works great. Looks great. External application of a 9 volt battery in case of depletion of four internal AA batteries is very reassuring. Eliminates worry about being locked out of house due to battery failure.

Difficult to install. They provided three different lengths of screws to secure the deadbolt none of which were the correct size for my door. Screws strip really easy (way too easy). Extremely difficult to get everything lined up to fit the screws. Really poor quality overall. Be prepared to spend way more time on this than you had planned!

Just didn't work
I was pretty excited to have z-wave lock to control with my security system. My excitement died pretty quickly trying to get this installed. For some reason, this is the first lock that just didn't fit my door properly. I tried the 3 different size screws but I just couldn't get it to fit snugly against the door. That is fine, as I was able to find a set of screws that worked however I couldn't get it to work at all and couldn't get the z-wave functionality to work. The lock does look good though and is high quality. I was a little disappointed with the overall installation of the lock, maybe you'll have better luck.

Very easy to assemble, looks great on my moms historic...
Very easy to assemble, looks great on my moms historic house, and we love the extra security that not having a physical key provides (no lock to pick). My mom, who is technology challenged, finds this easier to use than a traditional deadbolt :)
