      Answer This Question

A:  The SmartCode 910 is intended for installation on a door where the lock's interior is enclosed and protected from the outside elements. The keypad can face the exterior and withstand rain, sun, and snow. The full lock is not weatherproof and cannot be installed on an outdoor gate with no covering.

      by|May 12, 2021

A:  While we do have a small porch overhang over our front door it is directly South-facing and gets a lot of sun and occasional rain on the the Smartkey lock. It still works great so think it can handle a bit of being out in the elements but the buttons are not on a flat panel like some others I have seen that may handle rain better.

Nice looking. It took a little longer for my husband to install and set up than the directions said it would, but no big deal! Its fun to use the push button instead of a key.

Offering the convenience of keyless entry (afforded by the numerical keypad) as well as the reassurance of a physical keyed lock (in case of electronic malfunction), this deadbolt can be quickly and easily installed assuming the existing holes for the lockset and deadbolt are suitable (as noted in the supplied instructions). If installing in a new door, a drilling template is provided to facilitate the installation process. All of the necessary hardware is supplied in sealed bags, marked clearly to coordinate with the installation instructions. If your existing house locks use a compatible Kwikset key, a tool is supplied to allow you to rekey the lock to your existing key, eliminating the need to carry an extra key. In addition, the lock cylinder incorporates an “anti-bumping” design for increased security. The lockset will install in standard doors from 1 3/8 inch to 2 inches thick, with either a 1-½ inch or 2-1/8 inch diameter opening with a 2 3/8 in. or 2 ¾ inch backset (the deadbolt actuator is adjustable for backset). Capable of storing up to 30 different entry codes (from 4 to 8 digits) the lock may be set up with a “mastercode” to limit the ability of unauthorized persons from changing or adding access codes. Although the lock is said to be compatible with certain smart home systems, that capability was not used in this installation in a “not-so-smart” home. The lockset comes with two keys as well as the 4 required AA batteries (even though the packaging states that they are not included. Installation went quickly though if an extra set of hands was available it truly would only take a few minutes to install. There is a little balancing act needed between the exterior and interior pieces (and securing hardware) almost requiring a third hand. All in all, an attractive piece of hardware that installs and performs as advertised.

This is my first experience with home automation and using a coded keypad for my front door deadbolt lock. After thoroughly reading the installation instructions it took me a little less than an hour to remove the old deadbolt and install this new system. Installation was pretty straight forward and the Venetian Bronze color matches my existing door handle quite well. Once installed the deadbolt works well and has a nice solid feel. Programming a code for access was easy, as was using the Smartkey to match the key to my existing house keys. While the Z-Wave allows locking and unlocking through wifi I have not tested this feature as I do not have Alexa or Wink, nor do I have a compatible security system that this unit can communicated with and alert me via my smartphone that there has been an unknown entry. Those are great features offering peace of mind and will have to look into them for future home automation. I do like the fact it is very convenient to not carry a key and gain access by just entering a code. When leaving the house only the "lock" icon needs to pushed and the deadbolt is activated. Unfortunately the footprint of the deadbolt does not match my old deadbolt so I will have to do some minor touch up painting to the front door but not a big deal. Overall, this is a terrific automated deadbolt that I look forward to years of use and exploring its capabilities.

Great looking electronic deadbolt giving me security along with convenience for securing my door. Installation was pretty easy with easy to follow directions. It took about 40 minutes overall. I like that I can program more than one code so I can set a separate code in case I need to give someone else access that I don't have to give them my personal code. Then I just reset the extra code to something else for the next time. I like not having to carry my key when I go next door or go for a walk and don't want to hassle with carrying the key. I haven't tried the smart options so can't give an opinion on that.

Follow the instructions as they will guide you all the way. The last thing you do is insert the battery pack and program your codes from 4 to 8 characters. I don't have a home security system so I cant test the home connect function If you have a existing home in door and its to large they give you a adapter ring to fit lock. On the back side of door a mounting plate is used to connect the two units together. they mark the area where the control cable connects to the main control unit. Everything is mark for correct connections. I mark with red arrows where screws are inserted and also a red dot where you can reprogram the key to work with other kwikset smartkey locks! You can also change a dip switch which will lock the door after 30 seconds.

Slowly but surely, I have been automating my home. My latest improvement is this Kwikset ZWave lockset. I do not yet have the ZWave controller (I’m using Alexa for my existing home devices), so for the time being I’ve programmed this lock manually from the inside door location of the lockset (see picture). Installation of the lock was a bit cumbersome, because it is necessary to follow the detailed printed instructions precisely. I had to retrace a couple of steps due to my failure to adhere to some of the detail. All told, it took me about 1 hour to uninstall my old (manual) deadbolt and install this one. Now that I’ve gone through the process, I’m guessing, I could complete it in 15 minutes. The only critiques I have concerning the physical installation are the use of tiny set screws to secure the cover, and the design of the internal cable routing. The use of three tiny set screws to fasten the outer (inside) decorative cover of the box to the lock – the screws are very small, and chances are good that you will drop one several times as I did. If you do, they may be hard to find, so consider placing a towel under the lockset to capture the screw when it falls. The cover is secured by three such screws, there are no extra’s provided. If lost, it may be difficult finding a matching (gold plated) screw to fit. As for cable, it is a small electrical cable routing from the backside of the keypad (on the outside of the door) through the door to the control pad on the backside of unit at the interior of the door). It easily gets in the way of securing the unit to the interior side of the door, making it frustrating to attach the cover using the aforementioned tiny set screws. It’s doable, but a better design is called for here. The lock was easy to program manually, and the instructions for that are diagrammed right on the backside of the device under the cover (see picture). Should the batteries fail, or the electro-mechanical function be disabled, the door can still be operated using the physical key. BUT, you’ve got to have possession of a physical key – so leaving one with a neighbor or in a secret hiding place may still be necessary. This is a nice lockset, with a quality look. I've reduced my overall rating by one star to reflect the installation concerns I outlined above.

Overall this security lock is well made and can be a great addition to homes that already have a home security in place. Many of today's home automation products simply work using your home WiFi network and an App that allows to remotely operate various devices. However, this lock can not be operated over the home WiFi network and an App designed to work with it. Because of this restriction I only recommend it for households with an active home security system in place. Be sure that you have a handle on the door installed to open and close the door as this lock can not be grabbed for that purpose.

Fooled by box claims. Not everything is included to perform all shown features. If you want to perform the illustrated tasks such as remotely unlocking the door with your smartphone or monitoring who enters (see photos) you’ll need to add a home automation hub to your network (i.e. Wink ($99) or Samsung SmartThings ($70)). I’m new to home automation and I didn’t realize that you need an automation hub to control devices such as this lock. After I discovered this fact, I went back to the HD website to see how I might have missed this important oversight. However, the product description is vague telling you all the features it performs mentioning “through a web enabled device”. I expected to only to download a smartphone app. I was disappointed that I needed to spend more to get all the touted features. I wish the manufacture made an app for those of us who just want the lock features and not ready to dive into the deep end of home automation. I found the exterior of the box obfuscated these same facts (see photos). Still the installation was straightforward (similar to regular deadbolt) and the programming for codes is easy. Operation works well. It will be handy for when the kids forget their house key as they can just key in their code. The exterior finish was nice but I found the housing on the interior looks like plastic (because it is) and kinda cheap looking. Also, although it has a feature to DIY rekey the unit you must have keyways that match Kwikset. My Baldwin/schlage keys will not work in this Kwikset unit. About my rating: 5 stars – Exceeds all expectations. Better than the competition in all aspects, design, cost, operation, and support (A+). 4 stars – Nicely done. Better than the competition and solves the problem. (B) 3 stars – Works as expected. Has some shortcomings but gets the job done. Might be short in design, cost, longevity, or support. (C). 2 stars – Falls short of expectations and needs improvement. Pass and look elsewhere. (D) 1 star – Fails miserably. Does not get the job done, might even make things worse. Someone at the company should be fired. (F)

Have been slowly changing my home to smart technology and was attracted to the key-less entry system of this unit. Right out of the box the deadbolt system looks great, attractive brass finish that matches my previous locks. Installation was very easy. If you have ever previously changed an existing deadbolt it is just as simple and the only tool you need is a Phillips head screwdriver. Took me about 15 minutes to install. I love that it uses Kwikset ability to re-key the lock with other Kwikset keys, which means you can change all of your Kwikset keys to the same universal key rather than having a separate key for each door lock.It was extremely easy to program a door open/close code and you can install as many as 30 different 4-6 digit codes as you would like. It works great and I love the easy access. Currently it is not supported by Google home but it would be even better if/when I could use Homes voice commands and my mobile phone to operate the door lock.
