The SmartCode touchscreen smart lock with Home Connect technology enables the lock to wirelessly communicate with other devices in home. The lock allows the user (through a web enabled device) to remotely check the door lock status, lock or unlock the door and receive notifications. SmartCode is a one-touch locking motorized deadbolt. With your personalized code, you can enter your home with the convenience of keyless entry and the back-lit keypad provides increased visibility. It features patented SecureScreen technology to prevent code detection from fingerprints on the touchscreen. SmartCode is easy to install, program and use, and operates on 4 AA batteries. The SmartCode Touchscreen Electronic Deadbolt arrived well package and undamaged. The package included the door latch, door sill strike plate, the keypad assembly with an optional adapter plate, 2 keys, battery cartridge / holder with 4 AA batteries, a mounting plate, a cover plate, assorted screws, instructions, a “SmartKey” rekeying kit, and a cutting template for the door. I replaced an existing deadbolt I did not use the cutting template. Installation of the deadbolt was easy and was completed by following the provided step-by-step instructions. The provided door latch adapts so it can be mounted in a hole either 2 3/8 or 2 ¾ (on center) from the edge of the door. This latch is intended for a door with a sill edge that has a rectangular recess chiseled out. A latch for a non-chiseled door is not provided but is available separately. I had no trouble installing the deadbolt on my door. This deadbolt has a “SmartKey” rekeying feature. This great feature allowed me to rekey the deadbolt to my existing house key very simply. The rekeying kit consists of a specialized tool and a set of instructions. Essentially, this special tool is inserted into its own slot in the deadbolt and then the deadbolt’s key is inserted into the lot. The key is rotated and removed, and then your desired existing key is inserted. That key is rotated, the deadbolt clicks, and it’s done. This feature worked really well. Up to 30 codes can be programmed into the deadbolt, so each user may have their own specific code. There is a “Program” button inside the deadbolt’s inner cover and a series of steps make programming and deleting codes is relatively easy. Also, inside the cover are 4 small switches that control options for the deadbolt. You can turn off the status indicator LED, set the lock to automatically re-lock 30 seconds after it’s opened, turn off the audible “Beep” tone, or turn on SecureScreen. Secure screen illuminates 2 random digits that must be pressed before you may enter any of your programmed codes to open the door. These random digits prevent the deadbolt from wearing in a specific pattern that someone may be able to decipher to “pick” the lock. Overall, the deadbolt works very well. The keypad illuminates very well at night. Just the digits and symbols are lit. No other light comes from the keypad. Activating the deadbolt is accomplished by touching the keypad in the corner (where a checkmark is located), touching the keypad with the palm or back of the hand, or touching the keypad with three or more fingers. I would prefer a specific button to press to activate the keypad, as I think this would be easier, but the current setup does function well. The deadbolt does have a feature to connect it to a Security Enabled Z-Wave smart home controller to open up a series of further options. I do not have a smart home controller so I have not accessed these options. These features are not described in the instructions, but a review online indicates the deadbolt will send notifications when it is opened, and which code has been used to open it. I have used many key padded dead bolts. This by far has been the best one i have used. First reason is that the installation was pretty straight forward. Took me around 10 mins to install and just needed a screw driver. Part of this is because i had the holes already chiseled out from a previous lock. I follow the directions and only had one issue. It did not run the Lock Learning function when i put the batteries in. I did it manually and wasn't an issue. One this i would like to point out is the auto lock and unlock feature on the unit. My last one was manual. I was skeptical at first but is works great. No need to use to hand to open the door. Another awesome feature is no need for a master code. Just press the button and enter in your code.

              Do not buy this lock. It has never worked right for us, and constantly malfunctions. The "touchscreen" has a mind of its own and our code only works every now and again.

                We need a ZWave Deadbolt with a touchscreen for our alarm system. The Kwikset Smartcode 916 fit the bill perfectly. It was both easy to install and easy to setup. It paired with our alarm system quickly with no problems. Our only minor complaint is the touchscreen needs to know it’s been touched. No soft touch but a firm touch will activate it. Not hard but firm press. It nice to leave the house for a walk or a jog and not have to carry keys.

                      Worked until the warranty ran out.
                      Yep, was a pretty decent lock for a year. We could even tell Alexa to lock up at night. Then it started having little hiccups here and there. Two months after the warranty ran out it stopped working. The touch screen went out. Kwik set said to use a different brand of battery... Jeesh. At $200 bucks I would expect to work at least a year out of warranty. I cant afford 200/year for a lock. At least we can just use the keys.

                          I have bought four of these to cover two doors...
                          I have bought four of these to cover two doors and three of them have had problems that make them unusable. The batteries drain very quickly and there have been mechanical issues on three sets. They do come with warranties but those are always a hassle and for something so expensive it should just work. Even the one that works is not my favorite thing to use because the touch screen is not very sensitive and you end up hitting wrong buttons easily, especially when you have your arms full of groceries or have to go to the bathroom badly then you have to start all over after it locks you out. Save your money from the touchscreen terror and just get something with buttons.

                          We're happy to help ensure that your SmartCode 916 locks are working properly. Here are some troubleshooting steps to follow:
                          Measure the door frame jamb hole to ensure that it's at least 1 inch deep for the latch to extend fully and prevent jamming. Check that your door is aligned, that the interior mounting screws are not too tight, and perform the manual door handing step below.
                          1. Open the door and extend the latch to the locked position.
                          2. Remove the battery pack.
                          3. Press and HOLD the Program button while reinserting the battery pack. Release button once the battery pack is installed. The status LED will flash red and green.
                          4. Press the Program button once more.
                          5. The latch bolt will retract about halfway in and then extend to learn the orientation of the door.
                          Also, to improve the touchscreen response, we recommend performing a factory reset on the lock and reprogramming the user codes. In addition, you can also access your lock remotely through an app with the help of a compatible hub, like Samsung SmartThings. For one-on-one support, please call our Support Team at 1-800-327-5625.
