It provides a custom, built-in look. The Black Stainless Steel finish adds to the premium look and feel.

This thing is horrible all the way around
First they tell you that this is for a 30 inch opening, however, the screws for the cabinets to actually mount the trim kit do not fit a 30 inch opening , we had to modify to make it work, and then the edges of the trim are rounded. However my appliance that goes right underneath of it, my wall oven, is very sharply cornered.

Looks good, but install required some modification
As someone else pointed out. The braces for the trim piece aren't wide enough. I also had to install some pieces of wood in order to mount the trim piece. Overall wasn't the most difficult. But would have been a lot more simple if they made it longer. Happy with the finished look. Also my base wasn't high enough from the cabinet below, so I added a 1/2 inch piece of wood for the base.

It's a trim kit. It's job is to provide the look of a built-in microwave. It does the job. I'm pretty handy but I don't install appliances for a living. I found the instructions to be very confusing. Some of the measurements on the diagram seemed to conflict. There was guidance that one measurement should be x" or y" but there was no mention of why you'd pick one measurement over the other. Labels were not descriptive. Just go slow and take your time. Do lots of dry fitting and marking before you cut the cabinet opening.

Real metal and looks great! Pick up fingerprints
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was worried based on reviews on other websites saying it is plastic. Lowe's had a hard time getting this one due to back order, and I am glad i waited. It is a real metal. Matches my LG Studio oven stainless steel. Install was easy, just follow direction. The installer really likes it.
The only down side is that it will pick up fingerprints like crazy. The photo shows that.

Ok. So, we bought a big beautiful house. They had a small, aging Whirlpool microwave installed with a trim kit. We had just bought this big LG microwave, so my wife more or less insisted that we get this trim. I instantly regretted it. I mean, you can kinda tell from the photos that this thing is very shoddy. In fact, the whole thing (including the tray!) is just sheet metal with sharp edges. The instructions are terrible, and you have to cut out your own templates to install it.
I measured everything very, very precisely, but this thing scratched up the microwave and my beautiful cabinets terribly when it came to "pop" it into place. The kit includes two oversized screws for each corner and the holes are dead in the corner, so even after drilling pilot holes they split the cabinet at the edges.
Like I said it's just sheet metal, so none of it is straight or stays straight. Even after coaxing it as perfectly as possible, using shims, and attaching the fascade to the junky little tray, it's neveraligned. One of the four corners won't seat and it flush at the bottom of the microwave but not the top. So, after hours of painstaking work, you're left with trim that looks bad, scratches up everything, isn't straight, and drags on the door--causing damage every time you use it.
It seems painfully obvious that this product is an aftermarket afterthought. Whirlpool's OEM kit, in contrast, features a very sturdy and straight tray, well-designed trim with boxed edges to avoid damage and add stregth, and an infinitely preferable appearance...plus it doesn't destroy your expensive microwave and cabinets.
To top it all off, the trim costs almost as much as a microwave--though it would be pretty worthless at any price. Do youself a favor and avoid this overpriced gargage like the plague!

This product has some fundamental design issues and the instructions have several omissions, this from a mechanical engineer. The worst one is that the top and bottom brackets are not wide enough for what anyone installing the 30 inch wide frame would need! I had to add wood to the opening to make it narrower. It is like they just included the same brackets they use on the narrower model. If the opening is that narrow, why would anyone need the 30 inch frame?? I don't think anyone read the instructions before they printed them. They skipped the step where you actually screw the anti-tip brace down and the step 8 after you have just secured the top bracket is labeled "....and secure the top bracket." The other issue is that the top and bottom brackets do not have a fixed location wrt to the oven but the trim frame requires these to be within about a millimeter or two vertically or it will not "snap in" per the instructions. This required me to re-drill and adjust both brackets several times to get the frame to fit on. They need to totally redesign the top and bottom brackets. This should have taken me about 20 minutes but took almost 4 hours (including a trip back to Home Depot for screws to attach the wood strips I had to add to the opening to make in narrow enough for the brackets to attach). I'm glad they used different engineers on the actual microwave! It's great!
