Q:What keeps the gate closed on this latch, a magnet or an actual mechanical latch. I want to use it with a dog and left unlocked but I don't want him to be able to push it open.

Plastic trash
Installed on metal back gate and though was perfectly aligned and followed instructions exactly, the locking mechanism doesnt work. Unreliable lock, would get caught, locking mechanism wouldn’t engage, poor quality. Plastic and seemed very easy for someone to break it off if they wanted to. This is a door handle for looks only if you want

Zero starts
People, we are paying ~$100 for plastic. This was installed by my landscaper in June 2021. Today is Feb 2022 and the wind broke both side of this lock (and it is 60 degrees). Button rarely worked prior - run.

Extremely well made and superior quality to traditional gate latch mechanisms. I must admit I had to study the installation and also found an instruction video online to see how the pieces generally fit together. The problem I had was my gate opening is reversed from the printed installation instructions, in fact reverse from any online videos. Before I started drilling holes in my gate and fence post I set up a small test bed in my workshop, which matched my gate opening, so I could see how all the pieces went together. Once I completed the mock-up it was easy to transfer the same installation to my actual gate/fence post. Overall, this is a high quality gate latch, very well built and operates smoothly. It has a traditional type of house key to operate the lock, rather than a generic key that fits all latches.

With a LIFETIME warranty how can you go wrong? Yes it looks plastic, but stronger than that. This unit will fit well on a 4 x 4 wood post gate. It would not work on a metal 2 x 2 post attached to a block fence. They have another one for that.
The magnetic latch works well. Then you can use the key from both sides to LOCK it. When closing gate, when it gets close, it latches. Great setup.

Too difficult to lock/unlock
Purchased 2 of these gate locks and am very displeased with them. They were installed by professional fence/gate installer. The key does not work properly and there is difficulty in locking/unlocking. Documentation provided with the locks is only for installation - not operation. Contacted manufacturer and received a short reply that did not help. I plan to return both of them.

Was hoping that it would 'feel' like a $100 latch
It's one of those things where it's really tricky the first time, but the second time you can prob install perfect
Also worth noting, you need a 1/2" drill bit (not incl with most bit sets).
I accidentally drilled a hole into the post instead of the gate and couldn't help but think "why isn't there warnings for this on the instrux, or on the plastic align tool?"
The button sticks when you press it from the inside, and when the gate closes, there's still a rattle that I was hoping to alleviate.
