Q:Is this product resistant to rodents and woodpeckers? Or at least more so than cedar wood?
by|Jul 7, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Birds, such as woodpeckers and flickers may cause damage to siding products by ‘drumming’ to establish territory and attract a mate. Walls that sound hollow and echo when struck are the most attractive, regardless of siding type. Another possibility is that they are excavating for a nesting site. Woodpeckers do not consume the wood they excavate as a food source. Zinc Borate is not effective in protecting composite wood products from woodpeckers and flickers.

Q:Isn't a 1 x 8 board supposed to be 3/4 by 7 1/4 actual? This looks like it is thinner by 1/8 which won't match existing trim?

        Answer This Question

A:  the dimensions on a 1"x8" are pre-milled dimensions. After the board goes through the planers it is reduced to 3/4"x7 1/4". Smart trim is created to replace existing 1"x8" materials.

LP SmartSide Trim is the only way to go. It is superior to the concrete stuff that is way to heavy and breaks to easy. It cuts great and it lasts a long time. I have been using it for over 10 years and I will never use anything but SmartSide.

          How to protect horizontal trim
I am a contractor, and we install a lot of smart panel exteriors. I have it on my cottage. It looks great, But there is one great durability challenge with the trim. The front face is high density, and stands up well, but the sides of the trim are less dense, and even porous in places. This leads to water penetration from the top down on horizontal trim over doors or over the layer of smart panel from 1st to 2nd floor. If you cover the top of the trim with aluminum, pre-painted steel or plastic you wife might not approve. We have found that chamfering the top face to 20 degrees reduces the standing water from the trim which extends the life of the trim from 5 years to about 15 years, but even with the cut the trim life is far less than the siding. The building envelope depends on caulk, which must be inspected annually. It would be great if LP created a line of trims with 2 or 3 finished faces or had a process to harden the top surface of horizontal trim. If LP wants to talk to me about this, I will
