Questions & Answers

can this siding be installed horizontally?

Asked by: homer
Yes, I did it, and it works great! I put a couple of good coats of paint, especially in the grooves. Install the bottom first, making sure the upper panel laps over the bottom panel. Gives it a nice shiplap effect.

Is LP smart side better then hardie plank

Asked by: Sideman
If you go anywhere Hardie products are sold there is a sealed water filled display with Hardie Backer board in it. For years. It doesn't seem to deteriorate. However it is raw with no finish. Most sidings are not expected to sit in water for years. Working with wood is easier for most people. As with all products, following the installation instructions is imperative. Finishes should be installed as directed and properly maintained. The biggest issue with both products is lack of maintenance. Hardie cement products will outlast wood products. However the finishes may not. LP Smart side will last a long time but with poor maintenance, will deteriorate beyond repair. Hardie will withstand poor maintenance and can be resealed and painted.

what does "Minimum 6 in. clearance must be maintained between siding and finish grade." mean? is it "breathable" conflict with "water-resistant barrier"? does homeguard wrap work? the alignment bead line is at long side or short side? is this grooved or shiplap? is it 3/8 or 7/16" (hence 38/76 series)?
Asked by: joe
Thank you for your interest in our products. This means you need to ensure the siding is no closer than 6" to the ground. Any house wrap, such as Tyvek is fine. The panels have a shiplap edge on the vertical (8') side. The Series number indicates thickness. The 38 Series is 3/8" and the 76 Series is 7/16".

I was replacing siding on an old structure. The first thing that happened is that when positioning a panel to cut, a flat drop to the ground of only about 18 inches literally shattered the panel as cheap particle board would do. When the framing was absolutely flush, it went up as any other panel, it is fairly rigid and would go up well on new construction. But if your wall is imperfect, such as this old structure, you absolutely cannot suck the panel up to any flaw as you could with wood or HP, it will break. I also found that when using screws, the heads will not sink; you have to pre-drill a head sink. You will probably fair well with new construction and nails. I found its limitations and tendency to break frustrating. When writing this review, I noted that by submitting a photo, with review, you could win 1K...I was wondering about the many great photo reviews...hmmmm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent siding Be real careful handling, corners soft. If using nail gun set depth just flush with panel face. If screwing just sink bugle head screw to face. I did both on two sheds. Pre-primed, I used a heavy nap roller and painted. 1st shed 8 years old no signs of wear, trimmed out with 2x3 boards corners, top around windows and door. 2nd shed just made first winter no wear. Built 12ft x 30ft shed for friend 1 yr old still perfect. Most economical siding available. Two people can side any 8ft walled shed in a day easily. Overlapping edge handy, plan where they will meet. Standard 2x4 wall construction 16 in OC perfect. I built 3 doors with it also, no problems 8 yrs old, 2x4 framed door opening and 2x4 frame for door. Ensure to install center cross brace in door construction. All 2x4s mounted flat around edges of siding to make door. Standard door handle installation easy then.

Great product overall Sturdy panels for the money I've used these before and they are a good bargain and if painted properly will last for years. Just be sure and caulk/seal on joints and use a drip edge and these will serve well for shed or barn siding. I'm not a contractor or skilled builder but I posted some photos of how I installed the panels per the manufacturer's guidelines

It has a great exterior finish, I only painted it with enamel to match the color of my house. It is only 3/8" thick which makes it easy for one person to handle and cut, however when install over 16" o/c studs seams very ridged.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I don't know why there are any good reviews on this product! I used this Smartsiding 8 years ago, and it did pretty well! I used it again less than a year ago and the quality has dropped like a stone!!! The glue they use now is not even close to as good as it was, and the wood is not pressed as compact as it was. The 'nailing overlaps' are too thin too hold if there is any shifting, and it will pull the nail holes and split your calking! You absolutely must check every seam every year for years to come, and re-nail, re-calk, and spot re-paint. This is the HIGHEST maintenance siding available! They sell a thicker non-primed smart stile siding that is 5/8 thick for a couple extra bucks each at Home Depot that I will buy next time. Specially when the behr premium paint is now paint and primer in one. So, it does not matter that the better thicker, and slightly more expensive siding is not primed. DON'T WAIST YOUR MONEY ON THIS JUNK!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product I used SmartSide as the siding when I added a sunroom to my house. Installation was a breeze. The surface is a textured faux wood grain with a primer finish. You can run your hands over the surface and never get a splinter. I built this a couple years ago and still haven't painted it, and it looks like new. I used the scraps to trim around the inside of my garage doors. That was an easy installation as well, and it looks great. I want to finish the inside of my storage building, but I don't want to remove everything in order to install, mud and sand sheetrock, so I plan to use SmartSide. I'll just nail it up and be done! Painting will be optional. A big plus is that you don't generate a lot of dust that you'd get with a cement covered products, and it is easy on saw blades compared to cement coated products.
