can gravel, stone or crushed granite be used over this fabric?
Asked by: pspete
Stone can be. I wouldn't use gravel or probably crushed granite as they are more likely to provide an environment where weed seeds will land on them and be able to germinate.

Can it be used over flowers for frost protection?
Asked by: JP
Probably, but I wouldn't. It's on the pricey side, and is pretty porous to water. It kites well enough, though, so it would probably allow air movement while blocking the worst of the wind, however.

The manufacturer would have that information, but the material is polyethylene which is the most common plastic in production. So I had a large home landscaping project that I wanted to undertake which involved covering a hillside to prevent erosion as well as allow for fairly low maintenance going forward (mowing it was going to be difficult). Over the years I've used a variety of landscape fabrics and have seen first-hand than the cheap stuff will make you pay in spades later on when you have to redo work. Given the size of the project and my previous experience with this product, I wanted to make sure I had something that was going to last a minimum of 10 years and probably longer. In terms of the product itself, it's very strong (difficult to rip by hand), but also lightweight enough to where water will be able to drain through it. I will note that it's important to make sure that you do the following: - Surface preparation - must make sure that you've removed all vegetation as weeds/grass are much more likely to grow through it if they have a foothold - ideally you would apply this to new soil or soil that has been turned over and raked clean of vegetation - weed killer works as well if you want to use chemicals. - Fabric coverage - if you're using mulch, you should cover the landscape fabric with 3-4 inches of mulch to prevent weed/tree seeds from being able to land on the fabric and germinate. In the past, the few weeds that I've had with this product has primarily been where I let the mulch get too thin. If you're using rock, a couple of inches of cover should do. - Landscape spikes - if you're installing this on a slope and there's any chance of it being walked on, you should use fabric spikes to keep it in place. The mulch itself will generally do the trick for the most part, but if it's going to be walked on occasionally, it's worth the few extra bucks to install the spikes. All-in-all, I've been very happy with this product and plan to use it in the future.

I lay it out in the garden and tuck it under heavy duty plastic edging around the perimeter to create a kind of seal against weeds growing into the garden. Cover the weed block with a couple inches of mulch and you have a low-maintenance garden. To plant, lay out the plants where you want them and adjust their positions to get the look you want. Then simply cut "X"s in the fabric and dig a hole.

Occasionally have chose to redo areas and noticed this particular fabric is the only one that really holds up over time. Only negative is it's a bit pricey.

Like, a dump truck rolled over it to deliver 11 tons of sand, and it looks no worse for the wear. Too early to tell if it stops plants, but they would have to be tenacious plants indeed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well Weed prevention barrier works better than others. Must remove weeds BEFORE laying it down. Large pieces work better than small. Weeds will not grow through once covered. Uncovered, weeds will grow underneath.
