What size drill bit do you need to drill a hole in the grill for the Gauge?

Asked by Randy May 29, 2020

Answer

The guage "threaded body" is equivalent to 3/4 inch. So if you were to drill a hole you would need a 3/4 inch drill bit.

Will this replacement temperature gauge fit my Weber Summit 400 series BBQ grill?

Asked by Bob May 25, 2020

Answer

No, I don't think so, I believe the hole on your grill is a smaller diameter. The "Nexgrill" guage is made to screw in a 1/2 inch "npt" hole or sit outside of a rather large hole or similar size hole. if you use it, it may not work as you may expect.

Why is there a current temp on it

Asked by CB November 12, 2019

Answer

The guage is measuring "ambient" air (temperature) surrounding it. No "temp guage" should read "0" when you get it.

Don't buy this thermometer!
Broke after 2nd use of grill with this thermometer., the needle is stuck at 0 and won't budge. When I bought it I noticed the other ones on the shelf varied up to 20 degrees from each other, so shame on me for wasting my money on this one.

Moisture in gauge
Wife’s brother got it as a gift purchased at Home Depot about 5 months ago. Well the temp gauge had water beads inside of it. They won’t replace it. A cheap fix! I sent them the purchase info and images of the gauge. Having only 5-6 months you’d think they’d replace it but they aren’t! Now they lost a buyer, i will buy another gauge and I’ll never buy their merchandise and/or refer them to any interested client friends. Ron U.

The Nexgrill large temperature guage has a large 3 inch dial which reads up to 500 degree Fahrenheit. Large readable numbers, with a 2 1/2 inch stem. Can be screwed in (1/2" NPT threads) or installed in a hole and tightened with the nut that comes attached. It works pretty good for your backyard grill.

I restored an old New Braunfels smoker that my wife gave me many moons ago. I went through the proper conditioning process and added the gauge. I did have to drill the hole to install it but that was not a problem. The gauge worked immediately. It kept a steady temperature during my nine hour brisket cooking test. At first I thought it would get hot and give me a crazy reading but it did not. "Old Betsy" is ready to compete with the best. I've only had it for awhile but have used it extensively and so far, the readings are right on.

Like the large display easy to re-calibrate if needed I manufacture commercial bbq smokers and use these and have had no problems at all. For those who have had a bit of calibration issues remember heat rises so if you have a probe at the bottom of your grill and your "T" stat is at the top you will get two very different readings in the same cook chamber so location, location, location, Our commercial cookers use 3 to 4 of these along the cook chambers so the cook can adjust chamber temps or cook at two temps in one chamber by adjusting our heat tuning plates so ya I like em.

I only gave it one star since I can't give this zero stars. I needed a gauge to cook a brisket at 225 for about 12 hours. I bought this gauge on Friday and installed it Friday afternoon. I started my brisket Friday night. I set the pit at 225 - according to this gauge, at least - and went to sleep. The next morning, instead of a tender brisket, I had jerky. As you can see in the picture, I then tested the accuracy of the gauge by stick the stem in boiling water (a known temperature). The needle didn't even budge. That means my brisket was actually cooking somewhere over 400 degrees. They should pay ME $15 plus the cost of my brisket. Which is not cheap in this part of the country.

Response from HappyGrillingfromNexgrillMay 11, 2016
Hi JPCC, Robert from Nexgrill here. Sorry you had a bad cooking experience with the temperature gauge. We pride ourselves in our quality and it concerns us that your experience was not satisfactory. Having your brisket burn is not our intention. We do recommend checking in on whatever your are cooking periodically to make sure this does not happen since a grill will rise in temperature if the lid is closed. Please contact me directly at 800-913-8999 ext. 1169 so I can look into what happened with your gauge. Happy Grilling!! Nexgrill Nexgrill
Poorly Designed
I picked this as a birthday present to myself and when I finally got around to installing the temperature gauge, I found that instead of drilling a hole as large as the post coming down out of the unit, I needed to drill a hole as large as the much larger threaded portion of the post. The post was about 3/8", but the threaded part of the post was at least an inch big so the nut could tighten on the inside of the grill lid. This seemed absurd to me so I kept looking for a more reasonable solution, but there just is not that many moving parts to this unit - just one to be accurate. The post where I think the nut should have screwed onto was smooth with no threading, until it reached the part of the post that expanded to at least an inch and this was the only threading to screw and tighten the gauge to the grill lid. Home Depot customer service was excellent and I was able to return it but they didn't have any more in stock at the time so I have a 3/8" hole in my lid now until I get another one.
