Questions & Answers

Why do customers go online to complain about trouble they had with products, but they don't go online to research the item before they go to the store to buy it? If you do that, you will be see trouble people had, people asking questions, and other people explaining how to use the item. I rarely buy a product I haven't used without looking it up on homedepot.com and reading the reviews and questions before I get into the car or on the computer to order it. Yes, Leviton covers the envelope with warnings in English, Spanish, and French BUT they will tell the customer NOTHING about what type of wire it can be used with and what current it can handle! The front of the packaging says NOTHING about the product. Bad idea to treat the customer that way. They don't want to talk to you AFTER they had a problem with your product. Why not help them prevent those problems?

Can this plug be used as a replacement plug for a pre-strung Christmas tree where the previous plug had a fuse?
ByDec 4, 2017

Answer This Question

This does not have a fuse, so if you try to use it you will be losing the over-current protection that the fuse provided. It will probably work, but at increased risk.

By|May 5, 2023

Probably, but you would be removing an important safety device (the fuse). Use at your own peril (I mean that). You fried one fuse already they are there for a reason. The wires in a string of Christmas lights are much thinner than house wire. They can only stand a few amps of current before they heat up. Hot wires on a tree is asking for a fire.

Does this plug come in brown

      Not that I'm aware of.

Although Leviton does make versions of this item in brown, ivory and white, the only color I was able to find at my local Home Depot was white. I also did a quick search and didn't see the brown one on the Home Depot website as of Oct 13, 2017. If it's still not available, perhaps it could be special ordered from your local Home Depot. Can you use this plug on a lamp cord with a wire designed for a polarized plug
          ByNov 17, 2016

          Answer This Question

Better to use a polarized one. The polarized plug is a safety feature. One of the wires in the cord is the hot wire, the other is neutral. The hot wire can kill you. The lamp is designed to keep the hot wire away from you. For example, the screw base of a light bulb needs to be connected to the neutral wire because it's possible to accidentally come in contact with it. The center button on the base of the bulb is well away from anywhere your (or a little one's) hands might touch. May seem like a little thing, but doing CPR on a child is the last thing I want to be doing.

The 123 should work with a polarized lamp cord.

            By|May 4, 2023

The plug itself is not polarized. It can be inserted both ways.

              By|May 4, 2023

It is not designed for that and wires will likely be too large for this plug

                By|May 4, 2023

No. Only 18/2 zip cord with an 8 shaped cross section.

I understand all the complaints about this plug. But I like it. I have used several. Yes, the specs do not state that you MUST use 18/2 lamp cord - the stuff that is called zip cord by most of us. It is skinny and has a figure 8 shaped cross section. That is an important issue for this plug to be used without hassle. See attached picture of the end of the required wire. Also, I found that it took a little practice to put it on the wire easily. The main trick is to trim the end of the lamp cord squarely and to insert the end until it seems to hit bottom. But then you must push very firmly for the wire to get passed some obstruction. As soon as that barrier is past the wire will slide in another quarter of an inch or so before it bottoms. Now squeeze the prongs together to pierce the insulation. Then the cover will slide down the wire and snap into place. (You DID remember to insert the wire through the cover FIRST, didn't you?) Actually, the enclosed assembly instructions are pretty good, except they don't tell you about the wire type required and don't tell you that you MUST give that extra push to get the wire to bottom correctly - although they allude to the problem by saying that the end of the wire should be inserted all the way to the bottom edge of the plug.

Great product I have used for years. I restore around 100 lamps a year. I also buy my sockets and wire when buying the plugs. I am very disappointed you are discontinuing them. I will have to shop elsewhere due to this. Discontinuing a great product.

                      Did exactly what I needed
Worked exactly as it should. Our puppy chewed the plug off our lit tree. This was a perfect fix. Super quick and easy. Took 5 minutes to cut the wires and put the new plug on. Perfect for Christmas lights.

Purchased these and also 18g bulk lampcord. The size of the insulation will not fit into the plug so basically worthless unless you use a smaller diameter lampcord.

This is a small plug for lamp cords, etc. The design makes it easy to pull out of a socket, unlike several other plugs that are slippery and slope toward the back, making them difficult to remove. Assembly can be somewhat difficult. You have to force the wires all the way into the part with the prongs, press the prongs together, and then force the prong part into the outer case. When I say force, I mean that it is not an easy job. But when done I'm sure you will be satisfied with it from there on. If you have a spare outlet that is not installed you might consider placing the prong part into it, place that on a flat surface, and then force the outer case down onto the inner part. Older people and those that don't have strong hands may need help with assembly.

This thing comes with no instructions. I made some guesses and popped the circuit breaker before I got it right. It doesn't work with 14 gauge solid wire, but it seems to work well with 16 gauge stranded wire. Don't strip the wires, just push the insulated wires into the two holes at the back of the plug. When you push the back shell on it will push the prongs through the insulation, making contact with the conductors.
