Product Overview

  • Helps protect your home from the hazards of arc-faults
  • TEST and RESET button on outlet face for localized testing
  • Easy to install; fits in a standard wall box
The SmartlockPro Outlet Branch Circuit (OBC) AFCI Receptacle offers advanced technology to help protect against electrical fires resulting from arc-faults. Designed to detect a wide range of potentially hazardous arc-faults resulting from damage in branch circuit wiring as well as extensions to branches such as appliances and cord sets, the OBC AFCI responds by interrupting power. This helps reduce the likelihood of the home's electrical system being an ignition source of a fire. Often unseen, arc-faults can occur anywhere in the home's electrical system including within walls, at loose electrical connections or within electrical cords accidently damaged by impinging furniture. AFCI's are now required by the National Electrical Code in many areas of the home.
  • Use of test and reset buttons is similar to traditional GFCI receptacles of which consumers have become familiar with this means greater acceptance of the technology and a more user-friendly platform
  • Automatically tests the AFCI every time the reset button is depressed, the AFCI will not reset if the AFCI circuit is not functioning properly
  • By blocking reset of the AFCI if protection has been compromised, the SmartlockPro OBC AFCI reduces the possibility of end-users incorrectly assuming that a reset AFCI is providing protection
  • A line-load reversal diagnostic feature is provided which prevents the AFCI from being reset and stops power from being fed to the AFCI receptacle face or through to downstream devices

Questions & Answers

Can I use this device AND a GFCI receptacle downstream to protect a bathroom from ground faults and arc faults?

The inspector is requiring both types of protection in the bathroom
Asked by: Brock
The inspector is incorrect, based on the 2011 and 2014 NEC, AFCI is not required in bathrooms and garages. In CA, the 2014 code goes into effect Jan 1, 2017. In states have adopted the 2017 NEC, ( goes into effect on Jan 1 2017), does now require AFCI in the baths and garage, basically "Whole House" 15 and 20 amp 120 volt circuits "inside the dwelling" leaving only 240 volt circuits and outside circuits without AFCI. Also, 2017 NEC allows a standard circuit breaker to feed power through Romex to the first outlet, where an Outlet Branch Circuit AFCI is installed, thereby protecting downstream outlets. Usually, Inspectors allow the newer Code requirements to be used, on the theory that the thinking has been advanced.

Will this device protect the downstream circuit against a current overload greater than 15 Amps?

Asked by: Nigel
The short answer is NO. This device is NOT intended to be an over current protection device. A load higher than the maximum rated 15 amps will destroy or damage this AFCI and could create a fire hazard.

does this work like a gfci, where you only need one at the first recepticle to protect other recepticles down line?

Asked by: david
This has an external circuit which will protect after the AFCI per instructions.

Customer Reviews

15 Amp Tamper Resistant AFCI Outlet, White is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 63.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't confuse NEW AFCI receptacle with GFCI versions! It seems some of the posters are confused as to the use of these newly minted AFCI receptacles. They are NOT meant to replace the more common GFCI versions which protect more against shock. AFCIs protect more against fire hazards like shorting wires and cords. The NEC now (2014) mandates most receptacles that are replaced in an existing home, etc. must offer AFCI protection. The most exceptions being where GCFI receptacles are used. A replacement receptacle can be a new AFCI type (similar in look to GFCI) OR a new AFCI circuit breaker must be installed in the circuit where the replacement receptacle is to be installed. Both are not required in tandem. An installed AFCI receptacle can be configured in a circuit as to protect other (standard) receptacles downstream.
