I'm not sure why Leviton and JBL decided to manufacture this style of speaker system (I get the in-wall systems), but I'm glad they did. Starting with the shipping, they showed up in the manufacturer's box which was sturdy and had plenty of cushion. No scratches or scrapes on any peice. All five speakers, sub-woofer, and wall mounts are included. You'll notice something is missing, which is reason for the 4 out of 5 stars... no speaker wires! I get that some customers may have pre-wired their man-caves with gold plated 16 guage speaker wires, but for most of us, we get external speakers because our living rooms are already finished and running speaker wires through the ceiling isn't happening. It would be nice if the extra 100' of copper wire were included in the package. Other than that ball drop, this really is an excellent set of speakers out of the box and I hope they last a while. Definitely worth it!

JBL 5.1 Home Theater Speaker System Since I’ve had JBL speakers in a vehicle in addition to a Bos...
JBL 5.1 Home Theater Speaker System Since I’ve had JBL speakers in a vehicle in addition to a Bose Acoustimass system there will be some comparisons to those systems. The specs state the subwoofer is 100 watts but doesn’t state what the speakers are capable of handling. The base module/subwoofer is similar to the Bose and it delivers bass but accustomed to a separate sub with a much larger cone and more bass. The subwoofer is powered and has sound level knob to adjust the bass. Didn’t think to check but was disappointed that speaker wired wasn’t supplied with the system. Fortunately was able to use existing speaker wire to hook up the system. There are multiple configurations depending on the receiver or number of channels (i.e. prologic vs 5.1, 6.1, 7.1). This speaker system was attached to a Yamaha 7.1 channel receiver. For digital sound the biggest configuration difference, of those shown in the manual, is connecting the subwoofer using LFE connection directly to the receiver rather than connecting the speakers to the subwoofer then to the receiver (as with the Bose system). This type of configuration would have allowed for adding another subwoofer in addition to the bass module provided with the JBL system. The sound is decent and may perform better in a small more closed room than a large more open room. The small “cube” design is always a plus for small profile or mounting them to walls/ceilings. The system does provide wall brackets (see attached images). It does not provide screws to mount the brackets to the wall. It only provides the hardware to attach the speaker. The instructions warn the customer is responsible for mounting to the wall and choosing the proper hardware (i.e. stud = wood screws, no stud = wall anchor). The brackets are very simple but seem durable. One drawback is the hardware is exposed and not hidden as with other wall brackets. Choose the color or type of hardware wisely when using the included wall mounts. A tool is provided to tighten the knob so that it secures the speaker in the desired position/direction and keep it from slipping. Overall, for the price, it’s a decent system if on a budget for a home theater system. JBL makes good speakers. If you’re looking for a higher quality of sound and more bass then you may want to seek a different system.

I hooked these speakers up to an Onkyo TX NR626 7.1 receiver & home theater system. I had been using another set in a 5.1 system, so replaced those speakers with these. The room is about 15 x 20 with a cathedral ceiling. Easy speaker hook up with push lock wire connections, the brackets for mounting the speakers to the walls were straight forward and easily installed & I used all the previously existing wiring(not provided) Some differences to my other speakers, there was no dedicated center speaker, one can use anyone of the 5 satellites provided, which means that the entire frequency range that is the center channel is provided by speakers that are not designed with those frequencies in mind. The sub is deep in bass(and adjustable) for music and background tracks in movies, however both my wife and I had trouble understanding movie or tv show dialog until I disconnected the sub. I will try to adjust it and see if we can get a better sub level,(perhaps it had something to do with no dedicated center channel) but when listening to music, the speakers filled the room pleasantly and did not seem to strain, I did not test the upper limits of these speakers as their wattage input is 100 and this receiver can produce160 watts/channel, they sound good with clarity and depth/dimension.

I setup this system in our family room and the sound it produced was very good. I like that there is a volume adjustment on the sub so you can adjust it separate from the volume of the speakers. All of the connections for the speaker wires were easy to use and well made. I know this isn't a high end system but after listening to it I'm impressed and I don't see the need to ever upgrade.

Leviton's Architectural JBL 5-Channel Surround Sound Home Cinema Speaker System is superb! Great audio and excellent installation flexibility. This system replaced an old JVC 5.1 small speaker & subwoofer system. The difference was obvious. The sound was cleaner and crisper, the bass so much more realistic. My "room" was my office, about 18 ft x 18 ft. What's included: Five mountable speakers (wall or ceiling); mounting brackets; 30 pound subwoofer; instructions; and RCA cable for subwoofer. The system can be expanded to 6.1 and 7.1 surround-sound operation with the addition of optional AESS5 satellite speakers. You do need an A/V receiver/amplifier to power the speakers - you can't connect them to your iPhone. One advantage to this system is that you can put the speakers very close to your TV/monitor without causing any problems to it as the speakers have video magnetic shielding. The center channel speaker is identical to the others. That may not be good enough for some but to me it sounded fine. (I have a larger custom system with dual 6" speakers in a center channel speaker box. That takes sound to another level, both in volume and quality in a much larger physical setting.) For a standard home, these speakers are excellent for what is asked of them. The speakers are connected by wire. A simple thing that can significantly change the quality of the sound is the speaker wire you use between the amplifier and the speakers. Per Leviton: Use high-quality CL2/3 rated speaker wire for in wall wire runs. #18-Gauge speaker wire with polarity coding for outside the wall use only. For longer distances, #16-Gauge or heavier wire is recommended. Watch polarity (plus to plus; minus to minus). Usually the side of the wire with a ridge or other coding is usually considered positive polarity (i.e., plus). One last note of common sense. These speakers are not designed for a concert hall or a room of 50 people, and trying to "blast" them loud enough probably will blow or destroy the speakers. For a condo, apartment, or standard living room, you will really enjoy the sound quality and the flexibility of installation. I'm really happy - they have made a big difference in my listening enjoyment.
