A:  This product needs a neutral to work

    by|Mar 22, 2021

A:  No, you need the neutral wire.

    by|Dec 8, 2022

A:  You have to have a neutral wire for these to operate. That's the main reason I don't have one on my fireplace--no neutral.

I bought this for a 3 way switch application and to be used with the Wink Hub for home automation. Be sure to follow the wiring diagram carefully. Wiring is slightly different than with 2 tradition switches in a 3 way application. The screws do allow for secure attachment of the wires. Note that this is a pure switch and does not provide for any dimming.

works great with my Vivint system
Bought these on special 5 pack. Easy to connect and pair with my Vivint security system. The hard part of this install was squeezing them into the existing electrical box. I had to remove the old box and install a “ old work “ electrical deep box and rewire everything again. But it was worth the extra little bit of work

          Plus is better
Decora Smart switch, z-wave Plus technology R51-DZ15S-1RZ. First this is a new model of the DZ15S . With the addition of Z-Wave Plus. It is backwards compatible with regular Z-Wave technology but will not work with Leviton's new WIFI switches or its new app. It will work with older home hubs but you won't be able to utilize all the enhancements of the Plus! With the Z-Wave plus energy management, range and Mesh quality is improved . Transmission time to hub node are faster along with a smaller physical devise with lower energy draw are additional enhancements. Lastly it's capabilities allow for over air firmware updates. Something to consider is that your hub control Older Smarthings and Wink hubs along with others manufactures that don't have Z-wave plus protocol will work but most of the enhancements will not. The Wink 2 and newer rev Smarthings do have the Zwave Plus capabilities. For most the Mesh quality will be an important addition allowing more routes to a wider selection of other Nodes. In short it helps get signals get to places that might otherwise be weak signal areas by going from one to the other instead of from your hub to specific switch or plug. Set up is straight forward and pairs well with old and new Wink and Samsung hubs. Is seems faster reaction time with the newer versions hubs then old. The back is large so having shallow electrical boxes can be a challenge. Three way capabilities but you need a dedicated matching remote . Hence it gets expensive. You need to utilize a neutral White wire to connect the switch . This allows constant power into the switch . Some other manufactures get around this internally . Older homes or boxes with single switch this can become an issue . In my 20 year old house it's not been an issue as all my boxes have several neutral wire options. You will find the switch has changed from a click on the switch bottom only to activate to a rocker style which can be clicked top and bottom . Changeable covers with almond included, but no switch cover. Another change is the small green light indicator is gone making the switch have a better visual appeal. Of course using even less ghost electricity . A home hub is needed such as Wink or Samsung or others for automation .The switch is also comparable with Alexa voice controls. There is no mention to some of the other voice controllers (Google Home , Apple Home Etc) but I've seen chat regarding Siri! Another advantage is the ability to control better low wattage led bulbs , many switches have an issue at the lower power spectrum causing flickering or not being able to completely turn off the LED light leaving it at a faint glow. In my testing this isn't an issue with a one string led strip, or single bulb , smart or just a plain dumb LED bulb. The DZP15S is designed for single pole and three way switching . 600W LED CFL 1800W resistive, 1800w Incandescent/Halogen, 1800VA fluorescent and inductive. 1/2 HP 9.8A motor 120vac 60 Hz. For a three way switch you need to pair the above switch with a DDOSR-DLZ Switch remote.

          Decora Leviton Z-Wave Switch
Personally I like better the old design They seem like a quality product, they don't have that cheap feel. They come with two different color face plates, which is grate. I have white for all of my receptacles, switches, etc and it makes it easy to match to rest of them. The two colors gives great flexibility. As for connection it connected effortlessly with my wink hub 1st gen, haven't had any connection issues. The design is great. I really like how the bottom and top is curved out. These do not stay in off or on position when you press them; it clicks on and goes back to ready position and same for off without movement like a regular rocker switch. I like this design and think it looks better than the standard flat look on other z-wave switches. The only thing I wish this had is the instant update feature. I have to set the wink hub to poll the switches ever x seconds to get status updates when they are switched on/off manually. This how most switches operate, but the instant update feature would be nice. OVERALL I REALLY LIKE THESE SO FAR. DO NOT FORGET YOU WILL NEED A NEUTRAL WIRE.

A Beautiful Switch But Wiring Space May Be Tight
You would buy this switch only if you're "automating" your home lighting using a hub such as the Winkhub2. It's a beautifully designed product with a satisfying switch action feel and sound. The internal relay "click" is also "just right", and the green LED locator light brightness is also just the right intensity to not be distracting in the dark. Even the terminal screws are shiny and brightly colored. The terminals can accept either a looped or straight wire end, which makes wiring to match the old switch easy to accomplish. I have this product installed in a metal box which likely reduces Z-wave signal strength, but I have not encountered any performance problems at all. It just works. I gave this product only 4 stars though because it's likely many users may become frustrated when wiring the switch because its size limits the wiring space available in the box behind the switch. To be fair, Leviton's included instruction sheet recommends it be installed in a wall box having a minimum depth of 2 3/4 inches, but many of the metallic boxes in my house are only 2 1/2 inches deep (see photo showing space behind the switch in a 2 1/2" deep box). The switch extends 1 3/8 inches into the box. There is barely room enough to tuck wire-nuts and excess wiring in the space behind the switch, especially in a single gang box. Using a "deep" box (3 1/2 inch depth) makes wiring a lot easier. Installing in a 2 or 3 gang box can also make the job easier if you have space to one or two sides of the Z-wave switch. 12 AWG wire in the box also makes for tougher wiring since the wires are larger and stiffer than 14 AWG. The switch also requires a neutral connection (normally white colored wire). Bottom line - I recommend checking out the location(s) where you intend to install the switch(s) before making your purchase - if you have the space you will be happy with this product.

          A game changer
This product is a real game changer. Coupled with a hub and some software it changes the way you wire your house. More importantly, it changes the way you live in your house. I have been using Leviton and GE Z-Wave smart switches with the Wink Hub 2 and Wink Relays to do some exciting things. We are remodeling our home and the term “remodeling” is used in the literally sense. Doors, windows, walls are being moved or replaced and all the infrastructure is being redesigned. We are free to do most anything, and among other things, we have chosen to make our 55-year-old house a “smart home”. Even under these circumstances there are still practical limitations. Lights and appliances still require copper wiring for power but controlling that wiring has become much more wireless. This product is the primary means for making that possible. It uses Z-Wave wireless protocol and is the fundamental component for my smart house automation plan. The plan for this switch is to replace an old mechanical one I use to turn on and off a set of flood lights that high-light the front of the house. This Leviton switch is a direct replacement for the old one but with a few minor additional requirements. A common lead must be supplied and the line and load leads cannot be reversed. Also, it requires more space in the box so it can be a tight squeeze. For new installations, a deep box is a good idea. The switch can support multiple switching locations but with Z-Wave networking capabilities you may be able to avoid them. In the accompanying picture of the four-gang panel it is the third switch from the right. The right most switch is a Leviton motion sensor switch controling the overhead light. The second from the right is a GE Z-Wave that controls some other outside lights. Finally, the switch on the left is a mechanical switch controlling another set of outside lights. The next paragraph describes the remainder of the attached pictures. They are a series of screens shots of the Wink software that briefly show how the switch is integrated into the Wink network and scheduled to automatically turn on at “Sun Rise” and turn off at 4:00 AM. The switch on its own has little value unless it is connected to some type of controler. There are several different approaches. If you are not interested in the Wink software skip the next paragraph. All Z-Wave switches in my network are attached to the Wink hub and are a part of the Wink network. The process of connecting is directed by the Wink software in a multi screen process that varies dependent up device type, manufacture and model. After connecting the new switch to the network, the following set of photos illustrate the Wink setup procedure: Photo 2 - assign a unique and meaningful identity to the switch – “Flood Front Face”. Photo 3 – schedule the switch to turn on at Sun Rise Photo 4 – schedule the switch to turn off at 4:00 AM Photo 5 – confirm the scheduling by displaying the schedules on the schedule page Photo 6 – verify the next day that it turned on by displaying the Activity Log Scheduling is the simplest of all activities. Very complicated programs can be developed as your network grows and you gain experience with it. I use both Leviton and GE Z-Wave switches. They both are great products. However, I am somewhat partial to GE switches because they are approximately eight dollars cheaper for single switch circuits, thirty-three dollars cheaper for doubles and sixty dollars for triple switch circuits. I have not found any differences in the performance or quality that would justify the price difference. You lose the LED locator light on the load end of multiple GE switch circuits. So, unless you know which end of the circuit you are looking at there is no way of knowing if the switch is on or off. Which is no different than conventional switches. I also find the GE switches consistently easier to connect to the software. But there are a lot of variables that could play on that issue. I have always used Leviton products and have a great deal of brand loyalty. I only found GE bargain hunting. Having confidence in a brand is important if you’re going to invest in a network you need confidence it the providers and it always helps to have alternatives. The network provides many little convinces that yI am grow to depend upon. So it becomes more that a financial commitment. At this point I cannot comment on the long-term durability of any of the network components. I have only about a year’s experience with Wink and Leviton and slightly less that that with GE. But up to this point they all have been completely stable. I am comfortable that the technology is mature enough that I am willing to buy more of these switches.
