Questions & Answers

What would be the best tool to cut these?

Asked by: Hairwiz14
I used a jig I built for my skill saw which I used for cutting vinyl siding, similar to chop saw. I used a fine tooth plywood blade. I turned the blade around on the saw so it was not "ripping" the vinyl flooring. Worked great, cut smooth, no ripping. Also, used a table saw for the long cuts. This stuff is great to work with. I cut a few pieces with a utility knife like is shown on some U-tube videos. If I had to cut it all like that I don't think I would be done yet. Hard on the hand. You had to score it several times before it cut enough to break it.

So would I need to buy rolls of underlayment to lay down underneath this even though it has an underlayment attached??
Asked by: lonewolf
Our contractor told us that it depends where you are installing it. We are doing a residential basement where the concrete is likely to be uneven causing the floating boards to "slap down" when stepping on an area that may be lower than surrounding areas. Thus, he recommended a soft underlayment.

While it took a couple of tries to get the second row started smoothly and tightly, after that, installation was fairly easy and the floor looks great. The interlocking vinyl pieces locked into place with moderate tapping, using a rubber mallet (rather than the nylon-coated hammer described in the instructions). It took about four hours total time to complete a 10' X 12' space; including time to cut pieces to fit. I finished the floor on Aug. 14, 2018. Cutting the pieces only takes a straight edge (I used an aluminum T-square) and a sharp blade (box knife) to score along the cut line and then snap the tile apart. It does require two tools specifically made for installing these tiles - a 3" X 9" X 1/2" tapping block and a pull bar (for wood or laminate flooring). In addition, there is an edge moulding of matching color to finish off the the seam where the vinyl tile meets other flooring or at a doorway.

The plank patterns look great and I couldn't wait to get this installed in a basement bedroom. This was the most I've spent on Vinyl Plank Flooring and it is by far the worst quality when it came to installing. The planks crack and chip easily when interlocking together. Once the interlock piece is broken, it cannot be installed without a noticeable 1/32" gap. I was very delicate when installing this after learning how easily they break and chip and it still didn't help. They're just too cheaply made for even professionals to install. Everyone loves the floor while standing at the door, but when they enter they immediately notice the imperfections.

It looks and feels like real wood, complete with the texture, but it can take a solid pounding and not scratch or dent. The mat underneath does an excellent job of absorbing vibrations. Just a heads-up, and something that a future buyer needs to know, keep in mind that by putting this floor down, you likely will increase the echos in the room so plan with some sound-deadening materials like curtains or soft furniture. The flooring is a little expensive compared to other kinds of LIfeproof flooring, but the look (and compliments from neighbors) say that the right choice was made. It just looks stunning!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product - limited pattern variation This is the second time we have installed LifeProof lvp and the first time that we used this color Sterling Oak. It is extremely easy to install. Recommend having a circular saw to cut , but you can slice with a utility knife and snap to make cuts. The saw just cuts down a lot of time and pain on your hands. Are big gripe with the Sterling Oak is the lack of pattern variation. There were five different patterns + 2 in reverse. Some boxes contained five of the same board. It looks great now that it is installed but it took a lot longer to install because we had to focus so much on which board to put where so there weren't duplicates. We used 30 boxes, so one would think there would be a lot of variation. Even with the different batches there was no variation. We highly recommend this product but be prepared to spend some extra time with it.

I've installed many different flooring products in my 25 years of owning a dozen rental homes. I like the durability of this product so I decided to spend more and give it a try. It's made of PVC so it should be waterproof. It should not expand too much and buckle. It shouldn't scratch or wear out easily. It installed very easily. Probably one of the most easiest floors I've installed. It looks and feels terrific. I went directly over tile, and didn't need to purchase underlayment. There was one problem. Somehow a much lighter peice got in the mix. We didn't notice it until I was 3/4 of the way done. Once this product locks in you cannot go backwards. If you do you have to discard it because it will not lock again. The single peice also had a chip on a corner. All the other pieces did not come close to chipping. So this one piece must of been a defect. It's a shame because otherwise everything else was great. I've sent a letter to the manufacturer to see what they can do for me. I will post an update.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don’t believe the DIY reviews I am a contractor that has installed dozens of click together types of flooring. This product is junk and fits together worse than .99 cent per square foot. It ends do not click together without hitting it with a dead blow hammer. It can’t be taken apart without damaging. The long seam lines do not click together positively and have gaps. Finally ridiculously it comes in enough it comes with multiple widths which is unnecessary and complicates installation. There are hundreds of better products at this price.

You should definitely watch a you tube video on how to lock the flooring together to get a tight seal. I used a mallet and cut a 8 inch scrap of flooring (also cut it horizontal to make it approximately 8" x 3") to use as a block for getting the pieces locked in tightly. Scoring was difficult so I used jigsaw which made life way easier. It cut through the flooring easily. I also found it helpful to unpack multiple boxes, sort the pieces by pattern (I believe there are only four different patterns for Sterling Oak) in order to randomize the pieces I was laying. We love the finished product. It feels nice on bare feet and not too cold, even in a basement. I've never attempted a project like this and I ended up laying 1,000 sq ft on my own. If I can do it, you can do it!

We put this in our master bath remodel and I love it. It looks so good! Our contractor recommended this product. We had ceramic tile previously which cracked when we dropped something on it and I just hate grout as it is. This was the perfect solution. We have Allure vinyl plank in our basement which we installed a few years ago which I also was happy with, but this is so much thicker, nicer quality and has a better feel underfoot.

[4 stars because we only recently installed, so not sure about durability over time yet] Pleasantly surprised! I was 99.9999% against vinyl flooring in my kitchen and bathroom renovation, however looking for a durable and completely waterproof option, my eyes wondered to this product. I really liked that despite it being vinyl, the product looks like laminate (which I like). It also seemed quality due to the underlay pad on the back of the planks. I chose the Sterling Oak color, as I wanted a gray color that still had warmth to it due to my kitchen cabinets being a very light gray (didn't want to whole room to look cold). Other LVT brands/options were very heavy on the gray wash, taking away the oak color I love, so this was the perfect balance of gray and oak color. Installation was easy once you get a feel for how to snap the pieces together (should account for a few broken ones during your leaning curve), but using the rubber hammer and the block they recommend, it went very quick (one-day to install with 2 people working - one cutting, the other installing). They say you can use a utility knife to cut these, however we already had a table saw set up for other projects, so we ended up using that, which worked very well. All in all, we had very little scrap at the end of install. We're still pulling the kitchen together, but since install (a few months ago), the floor has been holding up well! Currently trying to decide if I want to do the whole house in this instead of refinishing my hardwood... ;)

Product looks great and the install is straight forward, my complaint is the boxes very often contain all one pattern. While I do typically mix boxes this is completely unacceptable. If you havea small job say 40 sf you could conceivably get 2 boxes with all the same pattern as I've opened 2 in a row that were almost all the same. This takes alot of additional time in opening most of the boxes and making piles of patterns and then shuffling them.

The floor was installed just a few days ago, and I am love walking into my kitchen now! This floor was a little more money then some of the other flooring I looked at, but I think the durability it has with the lifetime warranty that is offered was a big selling point for me. You won't be disappointed with this beautiful flooring.

I bought 34 cases and not a single plank was damaged. The only reason I didn’t give them 5 stars was because they are extremely difficult to cut with a utility knife. After installing the first row I realized I was going to have to switch to saws or it would’ve taken me a month instead of 2 days.

Installation was a breeze after working through the diagram error in the instructions (amateur documentation). The problem is the final look. The patterns are too knotty, there's only six different patterns so it's too easy to see repeats, and the finish is super flat, which shrinks a room very noticeably. Not my 1st choice for formal areas. No documentation on prepping the floor, I had to belt sand out a couple of uneven sub flooring spots, not a big or unusual job but it should me mentioned somewhere. Out of the 11 boxes I opened 4 of them had 6 of the 7 pieces that were exactly the same. Also the sales lady tried to sell me the wrong 'knocker', that would've damaged the tongue and groove. Again, the documentation or company videos really lack.

I would consider myself on the medium side of being handy however working with this product was really easy. Here's what I did: I used a box cutter to cut the ends of the plank with a square and once I made a few swipes, I snapped the flooring over my leg and that worked fairly well. If you are trying to use a box cutter to cut it all the way, I can see why peoples arms could hurt without snapping the planks. I did go through a ton of blades. For any odd shapes (around vents) I used a jigsaw to cut other shapes. I'd suggest to take the time and plan out you installation, clean your subfloor, remove baseboards and be patient and ensure you tap the planks together. Floor feels good under your feet, has good cushion and does not feel too cold due to the built in underlayment. Looks great too!

"Lifeproof" is nothing more than a marketing claim because it is anything but. We installed this a few weeks ago, choosing vinyl over wood because of it's durability as we have a toddler and dogs in the house. To our surprise it takes almost nothing to put deep and noticeable scratches in this product. My toddler's play table chairs leave scratches (where when used on our wood floors they leave no marks), a box drug across the floor left a scratch, and the worst scratch is when we had to move our fridge back into place it left terrible scratches-- even though we put down cardboard and the fridge is new so the wheels aren't in bad shape. We have filed a claim and will hopefully be reimbursed, but that won't reimburse us the time we spent putting it down, then tearing it up and putting something else down. It's just a really terrible product. If we wanted something we needed to be super careful with we would have gotten wood.

I just have a feeling 20 years from now people will be ripping up all this vinyl flooring wondering what we were doing lol... Installed it in my bathroom over boring standard contractor tile. I refilled the grout lines as a precaution but I don't think that is necessary at all given the thickness of these planks. As others have noted, I didn't even consider using a knife. Just go buy a jigsaw. Unless you have the one floor in the world that doesn't require some odd cuts, you're going to need one anyway and you'll save yourself some headaches using it for the straight cuts too. It's not a bad thing a knife isn't cut out for the job - these planks are too thick for one realistically.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Scratches easily and hard to clean I got this floor to replace engineered hardwood because I wanted the waterproof and scratchproof floors they advertise. Within a day of installation this floor had scratches even though I put felt pads on all my furniture legs, and we don’t wear shoes in the house. Also, this floor is the worst to clean!! The tiny grooves they put in it to give it texture collect get stuffed with dirt and look terrible. A regular mop won’t get the dirt out of the texture and it scratches so easily I’m afraid to use a scrub brush type mop on it. I literally have to scrub it with a sponge on my hands and knees for it to look clean. I really regret my flooring choice and it was thousands of dollars wasted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Flooring I purchased this flooring for my rental property. The color I initally wanted was special order so I chose Choice Oak since it was available in store. Installation was simple; however I didn’t make much progress with the score and snap method. I used a dremel tool instead for the short and ripped cuts. Added the quarter round in Seasoned Oak which matched well The finished result is great! I had one small area that ended at the steps to the basement. That’s the only dissapointment with this project - that the matching stair nose had to be ordered as its not available in store. Other than that, I’m very pleased. I plan to use this same color in my home as well in the kitchen bathroom.

I have put down several floors with different products. The Lifeproof planks were the worst of maybe 5 products. The click or locking system is flimsy and difficult to fit snugly. This product was the the thinnest of the plank systems I applied. Perhaps its thinness does not allow for a better locking system. In general engineered vinyl tile requires truly flat floor with little grace room, but these tiles provided no margin or error: A slight hill or bump caused the skimpy lock tabs to break and the planks separated. The tile was attractive and admittedly cheaper than the better quality brands ... now I see why they are less expensive.

I’m installing this with my dad who has done numerous laminate and tile projects and has every tool and trick known to man. As other reviews have said the seams MUST be tapped in with a block and mallet. This is a massive understatement. Also there were a handful of seams that would not seat flush that I’ll have to live with. Swapping out planks did not work. If this project would have been laminate we would have finished the project in 3 working days, but here we are after 7 and still have 2 more left (working on weekends 6-8 hours a day). Overall I’m very happy with the look and function of the flooring and like that it has some texture and grip to it. But this is by far the most difficult product we’ve ever worked with. It shouldn’t be this time consuming. I have 2 bathrooms left to do and I will NOT be using Lifeproof again. I have too much time invested in the floors I’ve laid down so far to rip it up and take back.

I took home a sample and was impressed with how thick and rigid it was. When I went back to the store, fortunately there was a piece laying out. I could not believe how flimsy the panel was and thought there had to be more made of thicker material. I found a person who worked there and showed him the difference between the sample and actual piece and he agreed it was not the same thickness, that the sample was just to show the color ( although the sample and actual piece stated the same thickness). Really, the sample is just to show the color? Why not just put out color samples instead of pieces with the same labeling as the actual pieces which are much thinner? A scam as far as I am concerned and very happy I did not buy the 500 sq.ft. I needed and got it home before I noticed the difference. I can buy peel and stick for half the price if I want flimsy. Kind of shows what Home Depot thinks of its customers.
